Most "best portable EV charger" guides lump wall-mounted units with a plug on the tail into the same list as truly portable units, then rank them on amperage. That framing conflates two different product categories. It doesn't tell you which product actually solves the problem you have.

A portable Level 2 charger is a specific category. It plugs into an existing 240V outlet with no wall-mount hardware, no drilled bracket, and (crucially) leaves with you when you move. It is not a JuiceBox with a NEMA plug on the tail. It is not a ChargePoint Home Flex you can "technically" unplug. The portable category is smaller and more focused than the roundups suggest, and picking within it is a different exercise than picking a wallbox.

  • Certification. Look for an EVSE listed by a nationally recognized testing laboratory — such as UL or Intertek (ETL mark) — to UL 2594 (electric vehicle supply equipment) and the applicable personnel-protection standards UL 2231-1 and UL 2231-2. UL and ETL are the listing organizations / marks; UL 2594 and UL 2231 are the standards the product is tested against. Energy Star and FCC labels are not substitutes for electrical-safety listing. Uncertified chargers sold on Amazon under generic brand names are a real category — usually the cheapest and the most likely to be flagged in an insurance claim after an electrical incident.

Three observations from this table.

The truly-portable US market is smaller than the roundups suggest. The four units above are our shortlist based on price, connector availability, portability and current US retail visibility. Other legitimate portables exist — J+ BOOSTER 2 (40A, ETL, IP67, interchangeable outlet adapters) is a notable example we didn't include in the head-to-head above. What's consistently NOT truly portable, despite frequent listing as such, is the wall-mount category (Emporia, Grizzl-E, ChargePoint, Wallbox) — those are different products with a plug option, not portables.

The 32A vs 40A gap is smaller than it sounds in marketing copy. 32A on a 10-hour overnight window is roughly 250 miles of range added. 40A over the same window is roughly 300 miles. For any driver who parks overnight and drives under 200 miles a day (which is nearly everyone), 32A fills the battery just as completely as 40A. 40A matters for short-window scenarios (park at 11 PM, out at 6 AM) or same-day top-up.

Some of these are perfectly functional. Some are the same OEM under different labels. What they share is a compliance grey area.

The specific things to check before buying anything in this tier:

  • ETL, UL 2231, or UL 2594 listing published on the product page — with a certificate number you can verify at the certifier's site. Not just "UL-compatible components inside" language.
  • A US-registered legal entity as the responsible party. An Amazon seller storefront with no US LLC or corporation behind it is a red flag for warranty enforcement and insurance claims.
  • Real warranty terms, not just a return window. A 30-day return policy is not a warranty. Look for 12-month or 24-month explicit product warranty language.
  • Reviews that mention outlet condition after 6+ months of use. The failure mode for cheap portables is plug-side thermal degradation on the outlet under continuous EV load — not immediate failure. Long-tail reviews are the signal.

Nothing wrong with a budget pick if the safety math checks. This isn't manufacturer FUD. Emporia's own safety blog is explicit about it. So is any experienced EV electrician. It's a category property of continuous 32A+ charging on residential outlets, not a specific-product defect.

What each product does about it varies mostly at the margins. In-line control box designs (Lectron, Tesla, most generics) sit mid-cable, so the outlet carries cable weight plus the small hanging plug. For most drivers, 32A can replace a typical day's driving over an overnight window. A full 0–100% charge may take longer, especially in large-battery electric trucks and SUVs (a 130+ kWh pickup pack, for example, will not fully refill from empty in a single overnight window at 32A). 40A pays back most clearly when your parking window is short or your daily driving is high.

What's the actual difference between J1772 and NACS?

They're physically different connectors that plug into different vehicle inlets. J1772 is the historical US standard, used by every non-Tesla EV through 2025. NACS is Tesla's connector, adopted by Ford, GM, Rivian, and others starting 2024–2025. Every 2026+ US EV either ships NACS-native or is available with a NACS adapter. Can I use a portable EV charger in the rain?

Regardless of the connector-side rating, keep the wall receptacle and the plug-to-outlet connection protected from water (inside a garage, under an overhang, or in a covered outdoor enclosure). Do I need to install anything?
