EVSE outlet got hot to the touch at 32A overnight — electrician or normal?
My Grizzl-e EVSE outlet got hot to the touch after 40 min at 32A last night. Breaker didn't trip. Should I call an electrician, or is this just normal in winter?

A hot-to-the-touch outlet at 32A sustained isn't normal in any season. The Grizzl-e itself has thermal monitoring built in, but if the plug or receptacle is where the heat is coming from, that's a resistance issue at the connection point. Check the blade temperatures on the plug end with an IR thermometer after 20 min. If the outlet is warm but the plug blades are significantly hotter, the receptacle contacts are degrading. That's not a winter thing.
Some warmth from the cable itself is normal at 32A continuous - resistive losses in the copper generate heat. But if the plug or receptacle face is hot to where you can't hold your palm on it comfortably, that's connection resistance, not cable resistance. Quick test: after 30 min of charging, feel the cable a few inches from the plug. If the cable is warm and the plug is significantly hotter, the problem is at the connection. If they're similar temp, you're fine.

First Vermont winter with my EV too. My Grizzl-e runs warm but not hot. Definitely get an electrician to check that outlet. Cold doesn't cause overheating - loose connections do.

I've run a Grizzl-e Classic at 32A for extended sessions in my garage setup. The handle and cable stay warm, never hot. The plug body should not be hot to the touch. On two of my test units, the NEMA 14-50 plug's molded strain relief didn't seat the blade shroud evenly — if the plug isn't fully bottomed into the receptacle, you get arcing at the blade tips, not the prong faces. Check the plug blade surfaces for pitting or discoloration. Dark spots on the brass mean the receptacle and plug both need replacing. The breaker won't trip on arc faults until the damage is already done.

huh, my charger at home just started making a weird noise when it's cold out. never had to think about this stuff before. so if the plug feels warm that's bad? i thought everything runs a little hot

The Grizzl-e Classic has a NEMA 4 rating, which means it's weathertight but says nothing about internal thermal management at the plug interface. Take an IR thermometer to the receptacle face at the 20-minute mark. If you're seeing over 60°C at the plug blade entry points, the receptacle contacts have already lost tension. NEC 625.42 doesn't address receptacle temp rise under continuous load, but UL 498 does — the maximum allowable temperature rise on a 14-50R is 30°C above ambient. At 32A continuous, anything past that means the spring contacts are degrading. What brand is the receptacle?

Some warmth is normal. Think of it like a phone charger: it gets warm but not scary-hot. The rule of thumb is whether you can keep your palm flat on the plug comfortably, or whether you pull your hand back. Pick up a $20 IR thermometer from Home Depot if you want a real number; 140°F (60°C) at the plug face is within safe range for a continuous 32A load. If you're still unsure, drop the amperage to 24A in the Grizzl-e app while you sort it out, and get an electrician out if it's actually hot. Lukewarm on its own isn't a concern.
I'd push back on the claim that "140°F at the plug face is within safe range." UL 498 allows a 30°C (54°F) temperature rise above ambient for receptacle terminals. If your garage is 40°F and the plug face reads 140°F, that's a 100°F rise - nearly double the spec. The 140°F threshold people throw around comes from the NEC's 60°C (140°F) termination rating on the wire itself, but that's the temperature rating of the insulation, not the faceplate. By the time the plug face hits 140°F, the internal contacts are running hotter than the wire's rated for. I'd say anything over 110°F on the plug face with a 40°F ambient needs investigation.
Interesting point on the UL spec. My garage hits 30°F in winter and my plug face reads 115°F at the hottest after a 4-hour session at 32A. That's an 85°F rise. Maybe I've been okay, but your numbers make me want to check with an IR gun more carefully.

140°F isn't made up, it's just being used as a fixed number when it's actually a delta. If you have to pull away after a few seconds, that's too hot. The IR thermometer threshold the other comment gave (140°F) is generous — I'd worry above 120°F at the plug face. Warm is normal. Hot enough that you pull your hand back fast is not. Feel the plug face after 30 minutes of charging — mildly warm is fine, if you wince and yank your hand away, get it looked at.

Different check for hardwired since there's no plug face to feel. The equivalent spot is the EVSE's line-side terminal block where the electrician landed the wires, and the breaker itself — those are the connection-resistance points on a hardwired unit, same role the plug/receptacle interface plays on a plug-in setup. Problem is you shouldn't be putting your palm on live terminals inside the enclosure, so this is really where an IR thermometer through the enclosure vents, or having your electrician check it with a thermal camera during a service call, does the job the palm test does for plug-in units. Warm at the enclosure exterior after a long session is normal; a hot spot concentrated right at the terminal block is the same red flag as a hot plug face.

Quick test without a thermometer: palm on the cable 6 inches from the plug, then palm on the plug face. If the plug is noticeably hotter than the cable, stop charging and call an electrician. If they feel the same temp, you're probably fine to keep charging until you can get it checked.

Had a call last month where a homeowner's 14-50 outlet tested fine with a multimeter but was reading 75°C under load. Pulled the receptacle and the backstab connections had loosened from thermal cycling. Replaced it with a commercial-grade, torqued the screws to 25 in-lbs. Night and day difference. Worth checking if your outlet was backstabbed or side-wired.

Had the same thing with my Grizzl-e. Pulled the receptacle and it was backstabbed — most residential electricians do that for speed. Swapped in a commercial-grade 14-50R (Leviton 279 or Hubble), torqued the side screws to spec, and the heat issue was gone. $20 part, huge difference.

Not normal in any season. Hot outlet at 32A means loose connection or undersized wire. Call an electrician. Torque check the breaker and receptacle terminations. A Grizzl-e pulling 32A continuous shouldn't generate noticeable heat at the outlet.

I've seen this pattern across several Grizzl-e units now. The outlet heating issue tends to show up where the NEMA 14-50 plug's strain relief boot wasn't fully seated during assembly, leaving the blade shroud rotated slightly off axis. That misalignment keeps the blades from making full contact with the receptacle. On the units where I caught it early, reseating the plug after loosening the rear collar brought the plug face temperature down noticeably within half an hour. Worth checking if your plug sits perfectly square in the receptacle or angles slightly once the cable weight pulls on it.
That strain relief boot theory is wild—never would've thought to check that. I'm only here for the winter, but now I'm paranoid my plug isn't square either. Did you need any special tools to reseat it, or just a screwdriver?

A hot outlet at 32A is a loose connection, not normal — eight winters up here and that's never once been a cold-weather thing. If it's a Leviton 14-50R, swap it now. Plug hotter than the cable six inches away means stop charging and call an electrician. Torque matters.

Dropped my charge rate to 24A in the app while I figured it out. Turned out my Leviton receptacle was the problem, swapped to Hubbell and torqued to spec - hasn't been hot since.

"Level 2" confused me too when I started. It's just voltage: 120V wall outlet is Level 1, 240V (like your dryer) is Level 2. Nothing to do with ruggedness. And the palm test compares plug face to cable temp, not to your skin temp. If they feel similar, you're fine.
You're not overthinking, you're just new, same as me. I bought a charger that said "outdoor rated" and assumed it meant it would work outdoors in any weather. Found out the hard way that "outdoor rated" just means it won't get damaged by rain, not that it magically handles cold temps or ice. Level 2 is just voltage (240V), not a toughness rating. A warm outlet is pretty normal at 32A, especially if it's cold out and the charger's running hard. Grizzl-e units are built solidly. Check it with the palm test after 30 minutes — if you can keep your hand on it, it's fine. Worst case, drop it to 24A in the app.

I gotta ask — when you say "hot to the touch," is that like a warm coffee mug or more like a stovetop that makes you pull your hand away? I've charged at a couple different Airbnbs and swear every setup feels different temp-wise. Hard to know what's normal when you're not at home.
