Level 1 charging barely adds anything at -25°C — is that normal?
I've noticed my Level 1 charger sometimes gives almost zero net charge overnight when it's -25°C. Is this normal, or do I need a heated garage?

That happens—battery chemistry slows down in extreme cold, and a big chunk of your charge just keeps the pack warm. Heated garage or pre-conditioning before plugging in can help if you have the option.

My Level 1 didn't keep up last February during that nasty cold snap. Plugged in at 6pm, left for work, and barely gained anything. Started parking closer to the house after that — overnight lows that cold are a struggle even indoors.
On the coldest nights even parking close to the house, my Level 1 just couldn’t add much—battery just sips power to stay warm. Didn’t bother with a heated garage but switched to Level 2 after last February, just for peace of mind. Still keep the connector inside after it froze that one time.

Seven winters, unheated garage, Level 2. Level 1 will barely add miles in a deep freeze—most of the power just warms the battery. Heated garage isn't required, but a Level 2 charger outside saves headaches. The car can handle it.

Normal. At -25°C, most of the juice goes to heating the battery, not charging it. Heated garage can help, but not everyone has that. Level 2 charger deals better with deep cold, but even then, charge speed is slow. Parking closer to a building helps a little if outside.
So if Level 2 "deals better" with cold, does that mean it's got a stronger winter/weather rating than Level 1, or is it just faster so more juice gets through? Would a higher-rated Level 1 charger help, or is it always a speed issue?
It’s mostly a speed thing—Level 2 just delivers a lot more power, so it can “outrun” the battery heating losses. Tried a heavy-duty Level 1, still crawled in deep cold. Never noticed the actual charger rating make much difference.
Speed only. Level 2 just dumps more watts into the car. Nothing magical about the hardware—both get slowed by cold, but Level 1 is trickling, so the battery heating eats most of it. Upgrading to a 'higher-rated' Level 1 won’t fix this.
Not a rating difference, it's a power budget problem. Keeping a pack warm at -25°C can draw somewhere around 1-1.5kW continuously depending on the vehicle and insulation. A Level 1 circuit is handing you roughly 1.4kW total — so on the coldest nights, you're not far from the charger's entire output going straight to keeping the battery alive, with whatever's left over trickling into actual charge. Level 2 at 30A+ is giving you 7kW or more, so that same 1-1.5kW heating draw is a much smaller bite out of the total, and the difference shows up exactly the way everyone in this thread is describing it. It's not that L1 is broken in the cold, it's that its whole budget can get consumed by pack heating with nothing left over.

so in texas my EV always charged fine overnight, but this winter in michigan the level 1 charger just crawled—barely any extra range by morning. is this just normal or did I mess up my battery somehow?
so everyone says the battery just bounces back after the cold? i thought one bad night might mess it up for good. just making sure my car will be normal again once it’s warm—never had to deal with this in texas.

I assumed 'outdoor charger' just meant not in a parking lot. In Georgia, I never thought about driveway wind or snow. Does a basic outdoor-rated charger even work the same way up here, or do people get special cold-weather versions?
Is Level 2 more waterproof or winter-rated than Level 1 then? Like if I got a Level 2, does it mean it’s rated for colder conditions, or is it just about speed? How do I tell the winter rating on the charger itself?
Bought a "weatherproof" Level 2 once thinking it meant bulletproof for winter. Plug froze into the unit in January. The manual listed the temp range in the fine print—wasn’t actually rated for -30°C. Check the label, and don’t trust the marketing picture with a snowflake!

I parked outside last night and my Level 1 charger gave almost zero charge, and my range dropped way lower than usual. Does this mean my battery is already ruined from one cold night? Or will it go back to normal if it gets warmer?
So if you park a little closer to the house, will it really help the battery avoid damage in the cold, or is my battery already weaker after a night of barely charging? Is there any way to know if one cold night causes permanent loss?

Does your car show any battery warnings on the dash after those nights, or just the usual cold range drop?
Leaving the connector out overnight is sometimes called out as safe in marketing, but after two winters my cable jacket was so stiff it cracked along the length. Ambient cold is tough on both battery and equipment. Nothing in the warranty about cable flexibility below freezing, either.

Worth separating out from the range-loss side of this: the reason your car throttles Level 1 down to almost nothing at -25°C instead of just charging slowly is deliberate, not incidental. Charging a cold pack at anything above a very low current risks lithium plating on the anode — the ions can't intercalate fast enough into cold graphite, so instead of absorbing into the electrode they plate out as metallic lithium on the surface. That's actual permanent capacity loss, and a real safety issue if it happens repeatedly, unlike the temporary range dip everyone's describing here. The BMS is capping current specifically to stay on the safe side of that threshold, which is why it looks like "barely charging" rather than "charging slow." So no, a single cold night isn't going to hurt you — the BMS is doing its job — but it's not just cold making things sluggish, it's the car actively protecting the cells from a failure mode that would cause real degradation if it let more current through.

California guy here, never needed to think about heaters for my garage before. So, is zero charge overnight in deep cold just standard up here? Does everyone with an EV have to baby their battery till spring, or do you just live with it?
I usually just live with it. Haven’t had to baby the battery—by midday, range climbs back up as everything warms. Heated garages seem rare here.
Five winters parked outside, Maine. Zero or near-zero overnight charge on Level 1 is standard at -25°C. Battery’s fine, just slow. Most don’t baby it—just plug in and wait for temps above -15°C for better results. Got a block heater outlet? Handy for old gas cars, but makes little difference for EVs.

Is the Level 1 charger the cable thing that came with the car, or is it a bigger plug device? If the battery barely charges in the cold, does that mean the cable, plug device, or the car gets damaged? Still confused!

Six winters: Level 1 barely keeps up below -20°C, most power just warms the pack. It’s not battery damage, just how cold affects charging. Range and speed come back when temps rise. Level 2 is better for deep cold, but still slow outside.
Same here—my Level 1 gets totally overwhelmed when it’s that cold. Have you tried charging right after getting home, while the battery’s still a bit warm from driving? Sometimes gets a little more juice in before the pack drops to ambient.

Four winters, Minneapolis, detached unheated garage. Level 1 barely made a dent during -20F stretches—almost all the juice went into keeping the pack warm, not actual charging. Level 2 helped but still not great for fast recovery until things warmed up.

Yes, that’s pretty normal in extreme cold. At around -25°C, the battery may limit charging speed, and some of the power goes toward battery heating instead of adding range. Level 1 charging is very slow in these conditions, so a Level 2 charger and keeping the vehicle plugged in overnight can make a big difference.
