Range dropped after switching to a NEMA 6-20 — is something wrong with my battery?

Just started charging on a NEMA 6-20 next to my garage instead of whatever I had before, and my range seems noticeably lower now — like 10% less overnight. Is something wrong with my battery, or is this normal for a slower charger? Also the plug felt warm which is worrying me a little. Never dealt with any of this before this car.

A 10% lower number on the app after switching to a 6-20 is just the slower charge rate, not a battery problem — nothing to worry about there. The warm plug is the part actually worth checking: at a proper amp setting a 6-20 plug should only ever feel mildly warm, so pull the cover and look at the receptacle itself for loose contacts or discoloration before you keep using it at full draw.

IP66 is an ingress rating. It says nothing about cable flexibility or the charger’s operating temperature floor. Those are separate specs. Did the product page list both?

If my charger says IP66, does that mean I can leave everything plugged in even if it's snowing or raining for days? What if the cord gets stiff or the plug feels warm — shouldn't IP66 cover that too? I'm worried now.

IP66 means the case is sealed against dust and powerful water jets—not continuous rain, snow accumulation, or standing water at the plug. If the cable gets stiff in the cold or the plug feels more than slightly warm, that’s not covered by IP66 and could mean mechanical aging or a bad connection, not just weather. If you notice repeated issues in extreme weather, that’s usually a problem with cable flex rating or a loose terminal, not the ingress protection rating.

I use a NEMA 6-20 for all my charging, no issues in four years. Speeds are slow but works for routine schedules. Never had a breaker trip. Just check that your cord isn’t warm to the touch after a charge. That’s all I watch for.

I use a 6-20 at home for a Model 3. Good enough for nightly charging in NH, even in winter. Never needed a service panel upgrade. Cord stays cool, breaker never tripped.

Four years on a NEMA 6-20 in Minneapolis—never needed a panel upgrade either. My only headache was replacing a cracked IP66 holster last winter. Charging’s slow but overnight covers my daily use. Anyone else notice wear on the holster after a few seasons?

The holster can crack if it sits in sun and ice for a few years—mine did after the third winter, nothing broke off inside the car or plug though. Now I just check for hairline splits each spring before things thaw out.

A 6-20 only gives you 16A continuous, so you're pulling roughly half the power of a 6-50 or 14-50 — that's probably your 10% overnight difference, not the battery. A warm plug at that draw is normal; it's only a problem if it's hot enough that you can't comfortably rest your palm on it. If it's actually hot, check for a loose neutral before assuming anything's wrong with the car.

Colder temps can matter if the outlet or breaker is installed somewhere exposed—wiring resistance can increase a bit in extreme cold, but usually not enough to trip a breaker unless there’s already a marginal connection or old hardware. Did your neighbor’s breaker feel warm after tripping, or was the plug itself hot to the touch?

That 10% drop isn't your battery — it's the outlet. A 6-20 is rated 20A but you only get 16A continuous out of it, so depending on your panel voltage you're pulling something like 3.3-3.8kW, way less than whatever circuit you had before. Fewer kWh delivered overnight reads as "less range" the next morning even though the pack itself is fine. Check the actual kWh added overnight in your car's charging history (not the range estimate) against your old setup — I'd bet it lines up with the amperage difference, not a battery problem.

5-20 is just 120V at 20A—so about half the charging speed of your 6-20. It’s glacial. Tried it once as a backup, barely gained any miles overnight. Wouldn’t recommend for routine use unless absolutely necessary.

If dampness is making the connection warmer, check that the cover and in-use cover are listed for your installation—NEC 406.9 requires weatherproof covers when in wet locations, even when plugged in. Moisture at the contacts will increase resistance and heat.

Rule of thumb I use: if you can hold your palm flat on the plug for a full 5 seconds without discomfort, it's fine — that's roughly under 140°F. If it's hotter than that, or you see any discoloration, that's when to actually check the outlet itself instead of just letting it sit.

Weather boots for plugs are just flexible rubber or silicone hoods you can put over the junction, not EV-specific, and you’ll find plenty at Home Depot in the outdoor electrical aisle. But the generic ones usually don’t seal tight to EV charge cords—they’re made for extension cords and might not fit the plug head on a Tesla mobile connector. I ended up buying a third-party boot online that was sized for the UMC plug, and it worked better for keeping rain out. The marketing will say ‘weatherproof,’ but unless it fits snug to the cable, water can still wick in during heavy rain or snow. Don’t trust the packaging claims unless you can see how it fits on your actual cord.
