The Tesla dryer outlet adapter you need is a WenStorm NEMA 14-30 for a modern 4-prong dryer outlet or a WenStorm NEMA 10-30 for an older 3-prong outlet.

Both plug your Tesla Gen 2 Mobile Connector directly into a dryer receptacle. Both deliver 24 A continuous charging — 80% of the 30 A breaker rating per NEC 210.19 / 210.20 via Article 625, and the locally adopted code edition.

Which Tesla dryer outlet adapter you need

You need the NEMA 14-30 adapter for a modern 4-prong outlet or the NEMA 10-30 adapter for an older 3-prong outlet.

The receptacle face tells you which one you have. Four holes in the standard 14-30 pattern is a 14-30 outlet. Three holes in the standard 10-30 pattern is a 10-30 outlet. The two are not cross-compatible. A 14-30 adapter will not fit a 10-30 outlet, and vice versa.

  • NEMA 14-30 → 4 prongs, dedicated ground wire, homes built 1996 or later per the 1996 NEC revision.
  • NEMA 10-30 → 3 prongs, no dedicated ground (neutral doubles as ground), homes built before 1996.
  • Not sure which you have? Count the holes on the receptacle face. Do not guess from the wiring behind the wall.

What each adapter does

Each WenStorm adapter is a short physical converter that plugs into your dryer receptacle on one end and accepts the Tesla Gen 2 Mobile Connector on the other.

The adapter signals the Tesla Gen 2 Mobile Connector to derate its output to 24 A continuous. That is 80% of the 30 A breaker rating per NEC 210.19 / 210.20 continuous-load sizing (via NEC Article 625, subject to the locally adopted edition). The car sees the derated limit automatically. You do not need to change anything in the Tesla app.

Historical context: NHTSA recall campaign 16E-091 in 2016 covered 6,729 first-generation Tesla NEMA 14-30, 10-30, and 6-50 adapters where insufficient-quality internal welded connections could develop increased resistance, overheating, or arcing (verbatim NHTSA filing). NEMA 14-50 was explicitly excluded from that recall. The remedy was replacement adapters. WenStorm's adapters are current production, not first-generation Tesla units.

  • Tesla driver in an older house who has not yet installed a NEMA 14-50. The adapter buys you months of overnight charging while you schedule the 14-50 install.

Skip these adapters if:

  • You already have a NEMA 14-50 outlet. Use the WenStorm NEMA 14-50 adapter (or the Level 2 Portable Charger) instead for 32 A continuous charging.
  • You drive a non-Tesla EV. These adapters are for the Tesla Gen 2 Mobile Connector only, not J1772 chargers.
  • Your dryer outlet is outdoors or in a wet location. Indoor-rated receptacles are not safe for outdoor charging without an outdoor-rated in-use cover and often a GFCI upstream per NEC 625.54.

Roughly 22 miles of range per hour on a Tesla Model 3 Long Range at 24 A per Tesla's published charging-rate table.

Overnight (10 hours), that is roughly 220 miles of added range for a Model 3-class vehicle. Larger vehicles like the Cybertruck or Model X add fewer miles per hour because pack efficiency is lower. For reference, the US Department of Transportation reports the average US driver covers around 37 miles per day (2022 FHWA data) — well below what a dryer-outlet session delivers overnight.

How to install and use

Plug the adapter into the dryer outlet. Plug the Tesla Gen 2 Mobile Connector into the adapter. Plug the NACS handle into your Tesla. Charging starts automatically at the derated 24 A rate.

No configuration, no app changes, no electrician required for the adapter itself.

Before your first session, confirm three things:

  1. The breaker is a 30 A double-pole. Open the electrical panel, find the dryer circuit, and read the amperage stamped on the breaker handle. Anything smaller than 30 A cannot supply the 24 A continuous load.
  2. The outlet is on an individual branch circuit. NEC 625.40 requires EV charging equipment to be on a dedicated circuit. If your dryer outlet is shared with the dryer via a splitter, the setup is not code-compliant. No listed splitter exists for this use.
  3. The receptacle is undamaged. No heat discoloration, no loose plug fit, no cracks. A damaged, loose, or improperly installed receptacle is a recognized charging hazard regardless of which adapter you use.

Touch-check the plug and receptacle face after your first session. A warm plug is normal. A plug too hot to touch means stop and call an electrician.

When you should not use this adapter

Skip the adapter path in these specific scenarios:

  • The dryer outlet is shared with the dryer. NEC 625.40 forbids this. Add a dedicated circuit instead.
  • The 10-30 outlet shows corrosion, loose fit, or has never been inspected. The neutral conductor doubles as the ground path on a 10-30, so a degraded neutral eliminates fault protection. Have an electrician verify continuity before EV use.
  • You need to charge at more than 24 A. A 30 A breaker caps continuous EV load at 24 A (80% per NEC 210.19 / 210.20 via Article 625). For 32 A or 40 A rates you need a NEMA 14-50 or hardwired install.
  • The outlet is outdoors without weather protection. Standard NEMA 14-30 and 10-30 receptacles are indoor-rated.
  • You own an original 2016-era Tesla NEMA 14-30, 10-30, or 6-50 adapter that has never been replaced. Look up your adapter under NHTSA campaign 16E-091 and get the recall remedy before charging.

FAQ

Is the WenStorm Tesla dryer outlet adapter compatible with the Tesla Gen 3 Mobile Connector?

The WenStorm adapters are designed for and tested with the Tesla Gen 2 Mobile Connector. The Gen 3 Mobile Connector uses a different adapter interface and requires Tesla's own Gen 3 adapters. Confirm which generation of Mobile Connector you own before purchasing.

How does the adapter know to derate to 24 A?

Each WenStorm adapter identifies itself to the Tesla Gen 2 Mobile Connector on plug-in. The Mobile Connector then sets the pilot signal to the correct continuous current (24 A for a 30 A dryer circuit). The car obeys the pilot signal without any user input.

Can I use this adapter with a portable J1772 charger?

No. The adapter is keyed to the Tesla Gen 2 Mobile Connector's proprietary input. It will not fit any J1772 EVSE. If you drive a J1772 EV with only a dryer outlet, check your specific charger's manufacturer documentation for approved outlet configurations, or hire an electrician to install a NEMA 14-50 or hardwired Level 2 unit.
