Two cars, one garage outlet — is there any safe way to charge both PHEVs at once on 120V?

My Bolt has been on the same outdoor L1 setup for about three years now, no complaints, I've got my routine down. My spouse just picked up a Prius Prime last month and we're now trying to figure out charging for two cars off the one 120V duplex outlet in the garage. First night we tried it we plugged both OEM cords into the two sockets on the same outlet and the breaker popped within maybe twenty minutes. I assumed since it's a duplex outlet with two separate plugs, we'd just be splitting the load naturally, or that it might be wired to two different circuits, but apparently that's not how it works, it's still one 15A breaker for both. Before I go buy one of those RV-style Y splitters or a power strip rated for 15A and try again, I want an honest answer — is there any safe way to run two Level 1 chargers off one outlet at the same time, or do we actually need to charge in shifts?

Your breaker did exactly what it was supposed to do, so don't fight it. A standard 120V 15A circuit is only rated for about 12A of continuous load, which is what charging is — it runs for hours, not in short bursts, so the 80% rule applies. A Level 1 EVSE by itself usually pulls somewhere in the 8-12A range depending on the unit and how it's set. Put two of those on the same duplex outlet and you're asking that one 15A breaker to carry 16-24A continuously. Twenty minutes before it tripped sounds about right for that kind of overload, actually. If it hadn't tripped — old breaker, corroded contacts, whatever — that's the scenario I really don't want you testing, heat builds up in the wiring and the outlet itself long before anything visibly goes wrong.

Worth adding the code language behind that 80% figure, since it's not just a rule of thumb someone made up — the code treats continuous loads that way, and anything running three hours or more counts as continuous. EV charging is about as textbook a continuous load as exists in a house. One more wrinkle for a garage circuit built or updated any time recently: it's probably on an AFCI or GFCI breaker, and those trip on sustained near-max current even faster than a plain thermal-magnetic breaker would. So even if the math looked marginal, the breaker itself is tuned to end this experiment early.

A few things would change the answer here before anyone weighs in further: is that a dedicated circuit just for the garage outlet, or does it also feed anything else on that run — exterior lights, a freezer, anything in a nearby room? And is the breaker actually stamped 15A, not 20A? Also worth knowing what your two OEM cords are actually drawing, some of them let you toggle between 8A, 10A, and 12A modes and people don't realize theirs isn't set where they think.

One thing to correct here — a duplex receptacle being two separate plugs doesn't mean two separate circuits, or even two separate hot conductors most of the time. In a normal garage outlet like yours, both halves are fed off the same ungrounded conductor and the same breaker, unless someone specifically wired it as a split-tab receptacle on a multi-wire branch circuit, which isn't typical for a single garage outlet and not something you'd have without knowing it. So there's no hidden extra capacity there. Plugging into 'the other socket' is electrically identical to plugging into the same one twice.

Okay, one question — what if you used a heavier gauge extension cord, or one of those splitters that lets you dial each side down individually? Would that actually change anything or is it still capped by whatever's feeding the outlet no matter what you plug into it?

Neither one helps, and this comes up in our support queue a fair amount. A heavier cord changes how much the cord itself can carry, not what the breaker upstream will allow through before it trips — the breaker doesn't know or care what gauge cord is on the other side of the outlet. And the adjustable-amperage dial on a lot of our units (8/10/12A) only lowers what that one unit draws. Dial both units down to 8A and you're still pulling 16A total through a circuit that's only good for 12A continuous. Our documentation is pretty direct about this: don't run two units off one 15A duplex outlet via a splitter or power strip, full stop. It's not a settings problem, it's a circuit problem.

There is real hardware built for exactly this, but it's not a splitter in the sense people usually mean — it's a load-sharing box that talks to both EVSEs over the pilot signal and only lets one of them actually pull current at a time, alternating automatically so neither car sits there forever unplugged. I retrofitted something similar on my own Level 2 circuit when my condo association wouldn't approve a second circuit, and it works because it's actively managing the load rather than just splitting a plug in two and hoping. A power strip or an RV Y-splitter does none of that, it just gives the current two paths to the same bottleneck.

One more angle here — ask an electrician for a quote on running a second dedicated 120V circuit before jumping straight to Level 2. If the panel has room and the run isn't long, adding a second 15 or 20A circuit to the garage is a much smaller job than a 240V install, and it fully solves this without any load-sharing hardware, since each car just gets its own breaker. Doesn't make sense for everyone, but for two Level 1 cars specifically it's worth pricing out both ways.

This is the kind of thread people skim for a quick fix, so to be direct about it: don't buy an RV or generator-style Y splitter for this. Those are built for loads that don't run continuously for hours the way EV charging does, and using one to feed two Level 1 EVSEs off a single 15A outlet is the exact overload scenario described above. The legitimate options in this thread are sequential/timed charging on the existing outlet, a proper load-managing device like copperleaf_w described, or having an electrician add a second dedicated circuit or move to Level 2.

We've been doing two vehicles off one house for over a year now, Bolt EUV and a leased Model Y, and sequential is genuinely fine once you set up a routine. I plug the car that needs more range in first thing when we get home, put a cheap outlet timer on it set to cut off around 1am, and the second car goes on whatever's left of the night. Neither car has ever actually needed a full overnight fill on Level 1, so staggering them hasn't cost us anything in practice, it's just not as simple as plugging both in and walking away.

Wait, the outlet timer, is that just a basic mechanical plug-in timer or something smarter? Trying to picture how that handles cutting power mid-charge without upsetting the car or the EVSE.

Just a basic digital plug-in timer, nothing smart-home about it. Doesn't matter that it cuts power mid-cycle either, the EVSE and the car's own charging system handle a hard stop the same way they'd handle you just unplugging it — nothing gets 'upset,' it just resumes wherever it left off next time it has power and the car tells it to.

Can confirm the breaker doesn't negotiate no matter how badly you need a car ready by 7am — learned that the hard way a couple times helping a neighbor troubleshoot the exact same setup before we figured out alternating nights was the fix. Not exciting, but 'take turns' is a completely normal answer for two Level 1 setups on one outlet, most people just don't love hearing it.

We went through this exact stage with two plug-ins a few years back, did the sequential thing for about eight months and eventually had an electrician put in a proper 240V circuit and a Level 2 unit both cars can use. More money up front than I wanted to spend at the time, but once you're charging two vehicles regularly the time you get back every week makes it worth it. Sequential charging on one 120V outlet isn't dangerous once you're actually alternating instead of doubling up, it's just a phase most two-EV households outgrow eventually.
