One 14-50, two EVs now — is a Y splitter a workable stopgap or just asking for a fire?

My wife's SUV lease ended in June and she went electric too, so we went from one EV in the driveway to two almost overnight. I've got a 14-50 outlet already installed from when I first bought mine two years ago — had an electrician run it for around $900 including a little panel work. Never needed anything more than that until now. Only outlet out there, and running a second circuit is quoted between $1,100 and $1,400 depending on which of the three guys I called actually shows up first. Money's tight this year between the new car payment and everything else, so I've been looking at Y splitter adapters that turn one 14-50 into two, figured we could alternate cars or maybe even plug both in overnight since neither of us drives more than 30 miles most days. Found a few on Amazon in the $80-150 range, one specifically marketed for "dual EV charging." Before I order one, is this a reasonable way to run two cars off one outlet, or am I about to do something dumb? Made enough beginner mistakes with this car already and wanted to ask first this time.

The "dual EV charging" marketing claim on those splitters is the part to distrust here, not just the wiring diagram. NEMA 14-50 splitters and plug adapters are general-purpose hardware — nothing on the market carries a UL listing for splitting a continuous EV charging load across two vehicles. If a listing isn't in the product photos or the certification database, the seller relabeled a device never tested for hours of continuous multi-vehicle draw. That's the plain Y-splitter category though — dual-EVSE units like the Grizzl-E Duo actually meter and cap each car's draw instead.

What are the two EVSEs actually pulling — the factory portable units at their default amperage, or something you've set lower? And is the breaker on that 14-50 circuit the standard 50A, or did whoever installed it size it differently?

Both are the portable units that came with the cars, neither of us has touched the amperage setting so they're both defaulting to 32A. Breaker's the standard 50A double-pole, electrician didn't upsize anything when he ran it two years ago.

The amperage math rules this out before the splitter itself is even a factor. NEC 210.19(A)(1)(a) sizes continuous loads — anything running 3+ hours, which EV charging is — at 125% of the load, which is the same as saying the circuit can only carry 80% of its rating continuously. A 50A circuit is good for 40A of continuous draw, full stop. Two EVSEs at 32A each is 64A combined if both run at once. That's 24A over the limit on a single 50A circuit regardless of what's doing the splitting — a Y adapter, two separate cords, doesn't matter, the circuit itself can't carry it.

Been running basically this setup for about four months now with a cheaper Y adapter, not the fancy "dual EV" one. Never tripped the breaker, never noticed anything hot. Genuinely asking, not trying to argue — if the math is that far off, why hasn't anything happened yet?

Nothing happening yet doesn't tell you much though, the failure just hasn't shown up as a tripped breaker yet. Been on two calls this year for melted splitter housings on shared circuits, both cases the customer said the same thing, ran fine for months right up until the plastic started deforming. Heat builds slow at the connection point before it ever hits the breaker.

Flagging this because the framing keeps drifting toward "monitor it and see" — it isn't that. Two EVSEs pulling 32A each on a 50A circuit is a code violation and a real fire risk the moment both cars draw at the same time, not a maybe. Don't buy the splitter, whatever the listing calls itself.

Ran the numbers on the options instead, cheapest one's free — you're both under 30 miles a day, so alternating which car gets the outlet each night gets the same outcome as running both, zero hardware. Doesn't help the nights you both need a full charge though — for that, a second dedicated 50A circuit, close to the $1,100-1,400 you're already quoted, gets two independent full-speed connections. A load-managed dual EVSE — Wall Connector with Power Sharing, Wallbox Pulsar Plus dual, ClipperCreek has one too — starts around $500 and negotiates amperage between the cars in real time instead of splitting a plug. Cheaper up front, slower on nights you both need a full charge.

$500 starting point changes the math for us honestly. We're not draining these things dry most nights, so having it slow down instead of fail entirely when we both plug in sounds like exactly what we need instead of two full circuits neither of us needs most of the time.

wait so if we both just set our chargers to a lower amp ourselves, like 16 instead of 32, would that fix it or is that not enough either??

The math could work at 16A each — 32A combined sits under the 40A continuous limit. The problem is the splitter has no way to enforce that either of you actually leaves it there. One person bumps their car back to 32A default after a firmware update or a swapped cable, and the whole safety margin is gone with no warning. That's the actual gap the load-managed EVSEs close — they measure and cap in real time instead of trusting two people to remember a manual setting forever.

Talked to my wife last night and we're passing on the splitter entirely. Gonna try alternating nights first since we're both under the mileage anyway, see how it feels before spending on a circuit or a Wallbox — appreciate everyone walking through the math instead of just saying 'don't do that.'
