My 14-30 dryer outlet — how heavy of a charger can I actually hang off it safely?
Eight months ago I plugged my wall-mount Level 2 charger — one of the ones with just a NEMA 14-30 plug on the end instead of being hardwired — into the dryer outlet in the garage because running a new dedicated circuit wasn't in the budget right after we bought the house. Charger itself weighs somewhere around 15 lbs and just hangs there on the cord, held up by basically nothing but the plug and gravity. It's charged the car every night since with no tripped breakers, no burning smell, nothing dramatic.
But I do HVAC and electrical work for a living (not licensed as an electrician myself, I just work alongside them constantly), and lately the outlet cover plate looks a little worn around where the plug seats, plate's got a faint discoloration I don't love. I keep seeing people say dryer outlets weren't built for something heavy hanging off them continuously for hours every night, only for occasional 45-minute dryer cycles. Am I overthinking this, or is a portable charger with a proper lightweight plug end actually the safer play here instead of a wall-mount unit riding on a dryer receptacle?

The discoloration is the actual issue, not a cosmetic one — that's heat. A 14-30 dryer receptacle is only rated for the intermittent duty a dryer actually pulls, and continuous loads (anything running 3+ hours straight, which EV charging is the textbook example of) are supposed to be sized with real margin, not run flat-out on receptacle hardware never tested for that duty cycle. Weight hanging on the plug making the blades sit slightly loose over time doesn't help — loose contact plus continuous current is exactly how you get the discoloration you're describing. I'd stop using it tonight, not eventually.
That's more urgent than I was expecting honestly. Is a portable EVSE with its own 14-30 plug actually any better, or is the problem the receptacle itself regardless of what's plugged into it?
The receptacle is the problem either way, portable or wall-mount doesn't change the current running through it. What changes is whether 15 lbs of charger body is also pulling the blades sideways every time the cord shifts, which speeds up wear. Lighter portable helps a little. Doesn't fix the underlying duty-cycle mismatch.
Adding to gravelfox — I inspected a house years back where a dryer receptacle feeding a Level 2 charger for over a year had actually scorched behind the plate, owner never noticed because the plate itself looked fine from the front. Discoloration you can already see from outside means it's worse behind the cover, not better.
The receptacle itself is the bottleneck either way — a portable unit's plug still asks the same 14-30 blades to carry the same continuous current for the same hours, so it doesn't fix a receptacle that's already showing heat damage. What it does fix is the weight hanging on the blades, since a portable's cord usually coils on the ground instead of pulling sideways on the plug all night. Worth doing both: replace the receptacle regardless, then go portable after that if the wall-mount's bulk was ever a real concern.

Had basically this exact setup for the first year with the Lightning before I bit the bullet on a dedicated circuit. Never had visible damage but it did make me nervous enough that I unplugged it and used the dryer maybe twice while the charger was disconnected, just didn't like double-duty on one outlet.

The load math is the part people skip. A dryer outlet's 30A breaker really only wants continuous loads at 24A, not 30A. Most Level 2 chargers sold with a 14-30 plug are already limited to 24A for that exact reason, so if yours is pulling anywhere near its rated max for 6+ hours every single night, it's living at the edge of what that circuit's supposed to handle continuously, on hardware designed for 45 minutes of cycling twice a week.

This thread is exactly why I went hardwired dedicated circuit from day one even though it cost more upfront. Didn't want to find out the hard way.

Ran the numbers on this for myself a while back — dedicated 40A circuit install vs. continuing to gamble on a shared dryer receptacle, the insurance/fire-risk delta alone made the $1000-1500 dedicated install pay for itself in peace of mind within about a year of nightly use.

For anyone reading this later with the same setup — the actual failure mode here is loose contact resistance heating up over hundreds of charge cycles, not the wire gauge itself. That's why it can look totally fine for 8 months and then go bad quickly once the blades wear enough.

Also — when you do pull the plate, if you see any melted or deformed plastic on the receptacle itself, don't reuse that receptacle at all even on the new circuit. Replace it, they're like $15.
