NEMA 14-50 outlet burned out after 6 months of use. Anyone else with Leviton or Hubbell have this issue? Wondering if I should switch brands or go hardwired.

That Leviton is likely the problem. Those cheap residential outlets aren't rated for continuous EV loads. Hubbell or Bryant industrial-grade are the way to go, but hardwiring eliminates the weak point entirely. Check the melted receptacle before rewiring anything.

Can confirm, those Leviton 14-50s are EV outlet killers. I've replaced a dozen at outdoor charging sites. Hubbell or Bryant industrial is the move. One thing that trips people up even after the swap — freezing temps make everything expand and contract, so the terminals loosen over time no matter how good the outlet is. Torque to spec (75 in-lbs on most Hubbells) and go back and check it again after 30 days. Hardwiring skips all of this but costs more up front. And don't forget the breaker — a 50A breaker riding a continuous 40A draw all night is its own weak link.

Leviton 14-50Rs are only rated for 50A non-continuous. EV charging pulls continuous current, so Hubbell or Bryant is the baseline fix, not an upgrade.

One clarification on the Leviton issue. The standard Leviton 14-50R is listed for 50A but that's based on the NEMA non-continuous duty cycle. NEC 625.41 requires EV receptacles to handle 125% of the continuous load, so a 40A EVSE needs the circuit rated for 50A. The problem is the receptacle itself isn't tested for sustained 40A draw — the internal spring contacts heat up and anneal over repeated charge cycles, losing tension. Hardwiring removes that failure point entirely because there are no spring-loaded contacts.

You nailed the mechanism — spring contacts annealing under continuous load. Worth adding: Leviton's cheap brass alloy creeps under heat in a way Hubbell and Bryant's higher-temp alloy doesn't. I pulled apart a burned one and the contact gap ran about 30% wider than a new part. Hardwiring sidesteps the whole issue, but if you're stuck with a plug, kill the breaker and pull it at month 3 and month 6 to check the receptacle face for discoloration around the hot prong slots. Seen a few that looked fine outside with damage already happening inside.

The comment about Leviton using a brass alloy versus Hubbell's copper alloy is half right. Check Hubbell's spec sheet - their HBL9450A uses a nickel-plated brass alloy body, not pure copper. The difference is the grade of brass and contact tension rating, not brass vs copper. Hubbell rates theirs for continuous duty at 50A; Leviton rates theirs for 50A intermittent. That's the actual spec difference that matters, not the metal composition claim.

That's inaccurate on the Hubbell HBL9450A spec sheet. Check page 2 of the datasheet — it's listed as a "bronze alloy with nickel plating," not brass. Different thermal expansion coefficient. Also, the continuous duty rating is 50A at 60°C ambient, not just 50A. Leviton's 14-50R is rated 50A at 75°C, but that rating drops under continuous load per UL 498 Table 4. Did your installer use a torque screwdriver on the terminals? That's where 90% of these failures start.

My first outdoor Level 2 year, I had a Leviton 14-50 and didn't think twice about it — until the plug started sticking around month five. Pulled it and the hot prong looked scorched. Hardwired is the better answer if the budget allows it, but a good industrial receptacle holds up fine if you actually check on it.

Four years on a detached-garage Level 2, and the Leviton 14-50 it started with didn't make it past month four before it melted. Hubbell replaced it — I torqued the terminals myself at install, then again at the 30-day mark, and haven't touched it since. Winters will find any connection that wasn't cranked to spec and work it loose.

A lot of people here saying 75 in-lbs for the Hubbell terminals. Check the actual torque spec printed on the receptacle or its packaging. Hubbell HBL9450A is 75 in-lbs, but the Bryant 9450FR is 60 in-lbs. Different models, different specs. Over-torquing strips the terminal threads just as sure as under-torquing causes resistance heating. Also, if you go hardwired, make sure the EVSE's line terminals are torqued to its own spec, not the receptacle spec. NEC 110.14 requires terminations be made per manufacturer's instructions. The sticker on the device beats any forum number.

Don't panic yet — a week-old install means you've got time. Call the installer and ask what brand went in. If it's the Leviton, a decent installer will swap it for a Hubbell or Bryant at cost if you push a little; I've seen electricians do exactly that. Thing is, the Leviton usually runs fine for the first few months, which is exactly what lulls people into thinking it's fine — it's the 6-8 month mark where the heat cycling catches up. If the swap can't happen right away, mark month five to pull the plug and eyeball the prongs for scorching, and pay attention if it ever starts feeling tighter or looser going in than it used to.

Believed the same installer line myself. Told me Leviton was "fine for EVs." Month 5, plug was stuck. Pulled it out and the hot prong had that burnt toast look. Your installer probably means well but hasn't seen what 40A continuous does to those spring contacts over time. Hubbell swap cost me $35 and an hour. Cheaper than the smoke detector battery I'd replace otherwise.

My Leviton melted at month five, my neighbor's went at month four — same installer telling us both it'd be fine. He's not lying to you, he just hasn't had a callback yet. Pull the faceplate and check the brand. Leviton in there, swap it yourself: $35, 30 minutes, or wait for the melt.

Your installer's not trying to screw you, most Levitons run fine for a year or two before anything shows. At three months, unplug and check the hot prong, the smaller one. Discolored or dark means swap to a Hubbell. Cheaper to look than to guess. $35, 30 minutes.

Mine's the same story I told above — believed the installer, then month five the handle wouldn't budge and the prongs looked burnt. He's probably fine at installs, just hasn't gotten the callback yet, because the failure shows up at month 5-6, not week one. The Hubbell swap ran me $35 and twenty minutes of an electrician's time.

To the folks in 77 and 82 whose installer says Leviton's fine — continuous 32A through spring contacts that aren't rated for it isn't a matter of opinion, it's just what the metal does. Pull the faceplate. Leviton in there, swap it yourself. $35 at the hardware store beats explaining things to your insurance adjuster.

Your installer isn't lying to you - he just doesn't do enough EV charger installs to know the difference. Leviton outlets are fine for dryers that run 45 minutes a few times a week. EV charging is 6-8 hours every single night. Two different use cases. Call him back and say you want a Hubbell or Bryant 14-50R installed. $35 part. If he pushes back, that tells you something.

I feel your pain. I bought a charger advertised as "outdoor rated" and it died after three months outside. Your installer says Leviton is fine? So did the product page for my charger, but "fine" doesn't mean "rated for continuous use." Pull the faceplate. If it says Leviton, swap it. "Fine" is what they say until it's not.

Your installer's right, Leviton is fine for most people. I've been using one for almost two years now and it's totally fine. The whole "it'll definitely melt" thing is blown out of proportion on here. Just check it once every few months. If it's not hot when you touch the plug, you're fine.

Two years isn't enough data to draw from. Come back at month 18-24 when the spring contact annealing catches up. I've replaced 400+ EV outlets in New England. Leviton 14-50R failures cluster at month 4-8 for daily 32A+ charging. Some last longer. None last as long as a Hubbell.

Said the same thing until month 5 when my plug got stuck and the prong looked like it went through a campfire. Two years on a Leviton at 40A continuous means your spring contacts are holding on through sheer luck. Pull your plug tonight and look at the hot prong. If there's any discoloration, that's the annealing starting. Found mine just in time - caught it before the melt, not during it.

Check the faceplate — Leviton in there, grab a Hubbell and either swap it yourself or get someone out. I'd rather be out $35 than explain melted plastic to my wife.

Pull the faceplate, brand's stamped right on it. Leviton in there, swap it. Physics doesn't care what your installer told you. Mine went at month four. $35 and half an hour, your call.

If it says Leviton, grab a Hubbell HBL9450A for $35 and swap it. 30 min job. Your installer's not wrong for normal use, but EV charging is continuous load - different animal.

Flip the faceplate — ten seconds, brand's right there. Leviton will run fine for a few months, so just pull the plug around month four and look at the prongs; dark spots mean swap. Hubbell means you're set for years already. Not homework, just one calendar reminder.

No screwdriver needed — the brand name is embossed on the receptacle face between the two plug slots. Leviton's in a capital block font, Hubbell's in a serif font with a small H logo. Generic names like Eagle or Cooper are the same residential-grade issue either way. From disassembling 8 burned Leviton 14-50Rs, the actual failure threshold is when the plug starts feeling tight going in or loose once seated — that's the springs losing grip. If yours still slides in with the same resistance as day one and the face isn't hot, you have time. Check it at month 3, not tonight.

IP66 rated outlets handle the cold expansion better than people realize. If you're gonna stick with a plug instead of hardwiring, make sure whatever you get is IP66 rated. The sealing helps keep moisture and temp cycling from loosening contacts as fast.

You keep bringing up IP66 for NEMA 14-50 outlets. That's an enclosure rating for water and dust ingress, not electrical load capacity. IP66 says nothing about the contact material, spring tension, or continuous current rating of the receptacle internals. The Hubbell HBL9450A is not IP66 rated - it's a standard industrial-grade locking receptacle. If you need weatherproofing, you use an in-use cover, not an IP66 receptacle. Mixing enclosure ratings with electrical ratings is how people buy the wrong part.

You keep pushing IP66 but that's an ingress rating for dust/water, not electrical load capacity. An IP66 outlet can still have cheap spring steel contacts that anneal at 32A continuous. Enclosure rating and contact material are two different specs. Focus on the Hubbell/Bryant continuous duty listing, not IP numbers.

Fair point on IP66 being just water/dust ingress. But if you're charging outdoors in the winter, keeping moisture out of the receptacle still matters for preventing corrosion on the contacts. Hubbell continuous duty is the main fix though.
