NEMA 14-50 vs 6-50 for my new EV outlet — which one and why?

We just moved into a new build outside Austin (Manor) back in June, and the garage was stubbed for a 240V circuit but nothing ever got landed — the builder left it as a rough-in. Before this we were in an apartment with a shared Level 2 charger in the garage, so this is the first time I've actually had to make an electrical decision instead of just plugging in and going. Ordered a ChargePoint Home Flex for the Mach-E since we do the Austin-to-Dallas run to see my in-laws pretty much every month and wanted faster charging than what we had before. Got two quotes so far. The first electrician wants to run a 14-50 outlet because, in his words, "that's the standard, works with anything." The second one looked at the panel, said 6-50 was the better call for the Home Flex specifically, and started talking about GFCI breakers and receptacle grades in a way that went a little over my head. A friend of mine who's more electrical-minded mentioned that some of the cheap 14-50 receptacles apparently melt after a year or so of daily EV charging, which neither electrician brought up. So: 14-50 or 6-50 for this specific setup, and does the receptacle brand or grade actually matter as much as I'm now second-guessing, or is that overblown? Also curious whether hardwiring instead of using an outlet at all would've been the smarter move from the start, since it sounds like that sidesteps some of this. Would love to hear from people who've actually lived with one setup or the other, not just what an electrician recommends on the spot.

Had ours done back in the spring. Electrician recommended 6-50 for the Home Flex without much explanation beyond "that's what it needs," and I didn't push back. Works fine so far. Couldn't tell you if he used a good receptacle or a cheap one though, never thought to ask.

Receptacle grade matters more than which NEMA config you pick. A standard residential-grade 14-50, the roughly $12 kind an electrician might grab off the truck, commonly shows heat damage or outright failure somewhere in the 3-18 month range under continuous 32-40A EV draw. An industrial-grade unit like the Hubbell HBL9450 is rated for that duty cycle and runs $60-80. On the 6-50 question specifically: the ChargePoint Home Flex doesn't use a neutral conductor at all, so a 6-50 gives it everything it needs and a 14-50 is just carrying an unused fourth pin. The plug type isn't the safety variable here, the contact quality inside the receptacle is.

Following up on the Hubbell mention above, should I specifically ask for that or something similar by name on the next quote, even on a 6-50? Neither electrician mentioned brand at all, just the outlet type.

Ask whoever quotes it to put the receptacle brand and model on the estimate itself, not just '14-50' or '6-50.' That's the actual lever here, the pin configuration doesn't melt, a cheap stamped-contact receptacle does. Our crew lead won't quote a continuous 40A EV circuit without spec'ing Hubbell or Bryant by part number for exactly that reason.

Priced hardwire vs a 14-50 plug-in before landing on 6-50 for other reasons. The plug-in route, receptacle plus GFCI breaker, was consistently $150-250 over what hardwiring the same run would've cost. Chose plug-in anyway because I wanted to be able to unplug the EVSE and take it if we ever move.

wait, if the 6-50 doesn't have the neutral pin does that mean it skips the GFCI breaker requirement too? trying to figure out if that's actually where the cost difference comes from

GFCI protection under the code is tied to the receptacle being used for EV charging, not to whether it has a neutral. A 6-50 install still needs the GFCI breaker, same as a 14-50. The only way to skip that requirement is hardwiring the EVSE directly, no receptacle in the circuit at all.

One thing nobody's said yet: if you ever want 120V off that circuit for a shop tool or an air compressor, 6-50 can't give it to you, no neutral. Kept our 14-50 for that reason alone, even running an EV-only load on it now.

Following up on the shop-tool point above, does an occasional pop-up camper count the same way, or is RV shore power a totally different plug situation?

Your camper's onboard 120V outlets and a 30/50A RV shore power connection are two different things, and that distinction matters here. If you ever want to run shore power to a camper, or let a visiting RV plug in at your place, most 50A shore power cords terminate in the same NEMA 14-50 configuration used for EV charging — that's actually where the 'universal at RV parks' reputation comes from. A 6-50 won't accept that cord without an adapter. If that's a realistic use case for you and not just a hypothetical, it's a legitimate reason to pay the small premium for 14-50 even with a Home Flex that doesn't need the neutral. If it isn't, you're paying for capability you'll never use.

Went hardwired from day one. Never had to think about receptacle grade or plug wear. Only real downside is I can't reuse the circuit for anything else, but that was never the plan here anyway.

Talked to our crew lead about this exact tradeoff. Hardwiring skips the receptacle problem entirely, that part's true. But if you ever want to switch EVSE brands, or the unit dies out of warranty, hardwired means an electrician visit to swap it instead of unplugging one box and plugging in another. Worth knowing going in.

Update: talked to a third electrician yesterday and went with 6-50 for the Home Flex, but had them spec a Hubbell-grade receptacle by part number instead of whatever was on the truck. Staying plug-in instead of hardwiring since we might switch EVSE brands down the line, and the GFCI breaker turned out to be required either way, so that wasn't actually the deciding factor I thought it was going in.

That's basically the setup I wish I'd asked for. Ours works fine six months in, but if you asked me what brand receptacle is behind the cover plate, I genuinely couldn't tell you.
