Should I install an outlet or hardwire my Level 2 charger?
Finally got the HOA sign-off after months of back and forth, so now I'm actually looking at quotes for the Level 2 install itself, and I've hit a fork I didn't expect. Every electrician I call has a different opinion on outlet vs. hardwire, and none of them explain why beyond "it's better."
The plug-in argument makes sense to me on paper — if the charger ever dies or I want a different brand down the line, I just unplug the old one and put in the new one. But the hardwire crowd keeps bringing up reliability, fewer parts to fail, no outlet to melt.
One guy also told me I'd need a bigger panel to even consider going hardwired, which didn't sound right but I don't know enough to push back on it.
Genuinely torn here. Not looking for someone to just tell me which one's "better" — more interested in what actually made the difference for people once they lived with the choice for a while. What tipped it for you, and would you go back and pick the other one if you could redo it?

Seven years on a hardwired unit outside on the garage wall. Zero issues with the connection itself — nothing to wiggle loose, nothing at the plug to corrode from being outside all winter. Mine's also on heavier gauge than the 6/3 Romex most 14-50s get fed, so I don't hit the ~40A derated ceiling those setups run into. If I sold this place tomorrow I'd have zero regrets about not taking it with me.

The reliability argument for hardwiring is real, but it undersells what you give up. I've swapped test units in and out of a plug-in setup dozens of times without touching a wire — unplug, mount the new one, done. A hardwired unit that fails or gets replaced needs an electrician for that swap too, not just the original install. If you think there's any chance you'll change brands in the next several years, factor that labor cost in on top of whatever the receptacle route already costs you.
The cost gap is smaller than people think, and it's not even a fixed direction — skip the receptacle and the GFCI breaker on a hardwired run and you're usually a couple hundred dollars ahead of a proper 14-50 install, but I've seen it go the other way too depending on which line item ends up pricier on that specific quote. Some jurisdictions also don't require the GFCI breaker once you're hardwired, since NEC 625.54's receptacle-GFCI language applies to the receptacle itself, and a hardwired circuit doesn't have one. That's an AHJ interpretation call, though, and it varies — confirm it with your permit office before you assume it applies where you are. Also, nobody needs a bigger panel just to go hardwired instead of plug-in. NEC doesn't set any panel size minimum for EV charging either way. A few installers push it like it's required, but it isn't.
When you say some jurisdictions don't require it — is that a documented exception written into an amendment somewhere, or just inconsistent enforcement from one inspector to the next? Those are two different problems. One means I can actually rely on it being true in my area if I go check the local amendments myself. The other means the inspector on my specific job could go either way even after I've already committed to a hardwired install, and I'm dealing with whatever they decide on inspection day.
Both, depending on where you are. A handful of states have written it into their amendments explicitly one way or the other, but a lot of jurisdictions just leave it as inspector interpretation on the day. Call your local building or permit office directly and ask specifically about GFCI on hardwired EVSE circuits before assuming either way — don't take a contractor's word for what your AHJ requires.

Been on a few service calls this year for plug-in units where the actual problem was the receptacle, not the charger — one had prongs discolored enough that the customer could see it once we pointed it out. Haven't seen that on any of the hardwired jobs I've been on. Small sample size on my end though, still only three years in.

wait if you hardwire it does that mean it's stuck on that wall forever?? like if we ever moved could we take it with us or does it just stay with the house
Stays with the house if it's hardwired, yes. But honestly, even with a plug-in unit, most people don't end up taking it when they move — it's one more thing to uninstall and reinstall correctly, and buyers usually expect the charger to convey anyway. The portability matters more for replacing a broken unit than for moving houses, in my experience.

Did exactly this when we sold the last house — unplugged it, took it to the new garage, had an electrician confirm the circuit before using it again. Wasn't a big lift. Hardwired, I'd have either left a working charger for the buyer or paid an electrician twice to move it.

Had a plug-in 14-50 for two years before I finally pulled the cover to check things over. One of the hot legs wasn't seated all the way, probably since day one. No damage, but it explains why the plug had felt slightly warm a couple times and I'd just written it off as normal.

The brand-swap point and receptacle failure story cut in opposite directions for me — still honestly torn. One thing I'm stuck on: switching EVSE brands later, is that a bigger job hardwired, or the same electrician visit either way?
Depends on the brand you're switching to and from, not just hardwired vs. plug-in. Most Level 2 units use the same basic terminal block regardless of brand, so an electrician swapping a hardwired unit is usually comparable labor to swapping a plug-in one once they're already out there — the real time difference is the truck-roll itself, which a plug-in owner sometimes skips entirely by doing it themselves.
