Mobile charger won't start on my brand-new NEMA 14-50 — handshake issue?

Just got a NEMA 14-50 installed for my Mach-E, but my mobile charger won’t start charging at home even though it works at work and Level 1 is fine. Anyone else had handshake issues or error codes with new outlets?

Is the outlet outdoor rated? I bought one labeled 'outdoor rated' specifically because I thought it would work in any weather — but it let me down. Shouldn't outdoor-rated mean it always works outside? Did you get error codes, or does it just refuse to start?

The term 'outdoor rated' for outlets is pretty misleading. I had one marked outdoor-rated (NEMA 3R enclosure), but a splash from a nearby hose still tripped the GFCI and left me stranded for half a day. 'Outdoor' apparently covers light rain from above, not actual exposure to weather or puddles. Did you verify ground and voltage at the plug itself, or just trust the 'outdoor' label?

NEMA 14-50 labeled as 'outdoor rated' usually means NEMA 3R or 4 enclosure—coverage from rain, not soaking or continuous wet. Handshake failures could be outlet wiring, ground fault, or undervoltage. Did you check actual voltage and ground at the receptacle with a meter, or just test the plug-and-charge?

I’d check the ground and voltage at the outlet, not just trust the outdoor label. Mine looked perfect and still had a loose ground connection under the cover. No error code, just no handshake. Worth opening up to double-check the wiring.

Had a job with a 14-50 that checked out on the install but wouldn’t handshake with the charger until we found a ground screw in the backbox stripped out. Panel voltage was fine. Swapped the box, no more errors. Might be worth a look behind the cover, not just the outlet face.

Seen handshake issues when ground isn't tight, even if the outlet looks brand-new. My first install had a loose ground screw and wouldn't charge until I redid the connection. If your charger works elsewhere, try checking the outlet wiring with a meter to make sure ground and voltage are good—not just the face label.

so, if my charger lights up but the car doesn’t start charging, does that mean the ground wire might just be loose behind the outlet? i thought if it was wired at all it’d just work. dang, i miss how simple my setup is back in Texas.

That symptom — charger powers up and shows a light, but the car never actually starts pulling current — is a classic sign the EVSE and vehicle are doing a handshake check that's failing, and a loose or missing ground is one of the most common reasons for that, yeah. The charger lighting up just means it's getting line voltage; it doesn't mean the circuit passed the safety checks the EVSE runs before it'll close the contactor and let power through. Both your car and the EVSE independently verify ground continuity as part of that handshake — if either one doesn't see a solid ground reference, they'll refuse to start rather than energize a potentially ungrounded connector. It's not that "if it's wired at all it'd just work" — that's actually backwards from how these things are designed. A regular wall outlet has no idea if it's properly grounded, it just delivers power. An EV charging circuit is designed to fail safe and simply not start rather than energize something that isn't verified safe. Have someone pull the cover and check the ground screw torque and continuity back to the panel before you assume it's anything more complicated.

Had a few handshake fails on new 14-50s where ground was iffy or the box bonding screw wasn’t tightened. Every time, outlet looked fine up front but voltage or ground wasn’t right. If your mobile charger works at work but not at home, grab a multimeter and test at the socket—especially both hots and ground. Sometimes it’s a 5-minute fix behind the cover.

A mobile charger that lights up but won’t deliver a charge often means a loose ground, not just a surface wiring error. I’ve had handshake failures vanish after finding a stripped ground lug or miswired neutral in the backbox. If your outlet is new and the charger works elsewhere, use a meter to confirm both hot-to-neutral and hot-to-ground voltages, then check tightness at the back of the receptacle itself—not just the faceplate.
