Sorry if this is a dumb question, but if it says IP66 on the charger, isn’t it supposed to work fine outside even in bad rain or snow? Or are there situations where weatherproof still isn’t safe? Now I’m worried my charger isn’t okay for all weather!
IP66 again just means dust-tight and can resist powerful water jets, not immersion or sustained wet-cold exposure. Did the charger’s manual specify an operating temperature range and clarify UV stability? Also, does it actually label an operating voltage/frequency range right on the unit?
IP66 doesn’t guarantee safe operation in all weather: it resists water jets, not standing water, heavy snow accumulation, or sub-freezing soak. I've tested four “weatherproof” units outdoors in NY winters—the weak points are cable entry seals and plug ends, not the enclosure itself. If your charger cuts out, check the plug for moisture damage and look up the UL or ETL listing number. Also, outdoor use means a rated GFCI-protected outlet. What plug type and circuit is your used charger running on?
IP66 is only for the case itself. Water, damp, or even condensation can still make it in at the plug blades, cable ends, or the EVSE handle—especially on used gear. Blinking lights almost always mean a detected electrical fault or GFCI trip, not just 'normal.' If weather got in once, it’s more likely to shut off again even after you unplug. ugh same, bought a used charger and got constant blinking mid-charge, freaked me out. is yours shutting off totally or just restarting?? mine went dead till I unplugged everything.
