Just found out my Leviton 14-50 outlet could melt — should I stop charging?
Okay so apparently my Leviton 14-50 outlet could actually melt? I've been charging every night for 3 months in my garage, which usually stays around 60 degrees, and I figured that meant I was fine. Someone in another thread mentioned the heat comes from the contact point, not the ambient temp. That got me worried, so I went and checked the outlet and the prong slot looks a little dark. I can't tell if it's always been like that. Should I stop charging until I sort this out? I really don't want this turning into a fire hazard. I can't afford an $85 Hubbell replacement right now — is running the charger at a lower amperage a reasonable stopgap?

What EVSE model and what amperage are you drawing? Some units let you dial it down in the app. If the prong slot is dark, stop using it until you can get a thermal reading or swap the outlet — a $15 Leviton replacement beats a service call.

Since I don't know the brand of whatever outlet I plug into at family's places up north, is there any way to tell a sketchy 14-50 apart from a decent one just by looking, or do you really need to pull the cover off to know?
I'd be worried too if I saw a dark spot. Still trying to learn all this EV stuff. Are you going to swap it out, or just lower the amps?
I moved from somewhere warm and had no idea outlets even had brands to worry about until I found this forum. Lowering to 24A in the app helped me buy some time while I saved up for the Hubbell swap.
Where in the app do you actually find the amp setting? I've poked around mine a few times and never noticed anything that looked like a slider for it.
man i am right there with you. my charger at home is in a heated garage so i never thought about any of this. now i'm worried about my outlet too and i don't even know what brand it is. so if i just lower the amps in the app that buys me time?

My Leviton outlet got that same dark spot around month 3. Dialed it down to 24A in the app and saved up for a couple months before I swapped in the Hubbell. Worked fine in the meantime — you've got some time here.

If the prong slot isn't discolored at all, is a single blink on its own basically meaningless, or still worth an electrician looking at just in case?
