Installer never mentioned GFCI for my L2 outlet — should that worry me?
My installer never mentioned GFCI when we talked about my garage outlet for the L2 charger — is that something I should be asking about, or a non-issue for a straightforward install? Now I'm second-guessing whether they missed something.

NEC 625 says GFCI for outdoor and garage L2 receptacles. But some local code inspectors here in ME want GFCI breakers even on hardwired units. Check with your AHJ before rough-in.

Depends whether it's hardwired or a plug-in unit. NEC 625.44 only requires GFCI for the outlet itself, not a hardwired connection — but the 2023 NEC expanded 210.8(A) to cover 50A garage outlets too, so a 14-50 receptacle in a garage needs a GFCI breaker either way. Something to watch for: I ran a ChargePoint Home Flex on a 50A GFCI breaker and it false-tripped at 32A — some EVSEs with their own GFCI monitoring don't play nice stacked with a breaker's. Worth checking whether yours has onboard GFCI before you assume the breaker route is simple, and ask your installer which code cycle they're working under.
Small correction: NEC 625.44 requires GFCI for EVSE receptacles, not hardwired units. The 2020 cycle added 210.8(A), which pulled in ALL 125V through 250V garage receptacles — that includes 14-50R. But 625.54 lets the EVSE's own listed GFCI system satisfy that requirement. So if it's UL 2231 listed with onboard GFCI monitoring, you don't need a separate breaker for it. Nuisance tripping with two GFCIs in series is real — I've seen it. Look for whether the unit is listed as providing personnel protection under 625.54.
The EVSE's onboard GFCI per UL 2231 and a GFCI breaker serve different protection levels. UL 2231 covers personnel protection via the EVSE's control pilot circuit - it detects ground faults by monitoring the pilot signal. A GFCI breaker detects imbalance between hot and neutral directly. The nuisance tripping issue happens when both devices have different trip thresholds and response curves. The 2023 NEC 210.8(A) requiring GFCI on all 250V garage receptacles doesn't override 625.54 which allows the EVSE's listed GFCI to count as the primary protection. That ChargePoint nuisance-trip you mentioned — was it on a GFCI breaker that had a different trip curve than the EVSE's onboard protection? Some GFCI breakers are more sensitive to high-frequency leakage from switching power supplies. Did the inspector cite a specific section when they flagged it?
Yes, it was on a Siemens QF250A breaker. The EVSE's onboard GFCI tripped first but the breaker didn't—until it did after a few weeks. So the EVSE's built-in GFCI isn't enough? Why would a standard GFCI breaker trip from the EVSE's own protection? That sounds like double coverage that just causes problems.

Vermont adopted 2020 NEC. Our inspectors here generally accept the EVSE's onboard GFCI as meeting 625.54 on hardwired units. But I've had two callbacks on plug-in units where they wanted a GFCI breaker on the 14-50 despite the unit having its own protection. Ask your AHJ before you buy the breaker.

Had a ChargePoint Home Flex nuisance-trip a 50A GFCI breaker at 30A. Swapped to standard breaker, no issues since. If the EVSE has onboard GFCI per UL 2231, stacking another one at the panel just invites callbacks. Hardwired avoids the whole thing.

What year NEC code cycle did your jurisdiction adopt? The 2023 expansion in 210.8(A) for 250V garage receptacles is what trips up most people running plug-in units, but 625.54 lets the EVSE's own listed GFCI (per UL 2231) serve as primary protection. Hardwired avoids the stacking issue entirely. Which specific AHJ have you seen require the breaker on top of onboard GFCI?

I am not an electrician, but my town required a GFCI breaker for my outdoor L2 install even though the unit has its own. Inspector said the EVSE's internal GFCI does not replace the code requirement. Check with your local building department—they will tell you what cycle they enforce.

What year NEC code cycle did your jurisdiction adopt? Vermont’s on 2020, so garage receptacles for EVSE need GFCI per 625.54. Your installer may have missed it.

As an installer, this is worth asking about directly — NEC 625 and local code don't always agree on when GFCI is required for L2 circuits, and I see installers skip mentioning it more than they should. Depends on whether it's hardwired or plug-in, and what code cycle your area's on. Worth a follow-up call rather than assuming it's fine.
