How does Tesla Wall Connector Power Sharing actually divide power between cars charging at once?
I manage a six-unit building in southern Maine, nothing fancy, three floors, shared parking lot behind the building. Two years ago one of the tenants asked about installing a charger for her own use and we ended up putting in a single Tesla Wall Connector on the building's electrical service, wired to a subpanel we already had room on. That's worked fine, she's the only one using it.
Now a second tenant just leased a Model Y and asked if we could add a spot for him too. My first instinct was to just call the same electrician back and put in a second, completely separate circuit, but when I mentioned it he brought up Power Sharing instead, apparently you can run multiple Wall Connectors off the same circuit and they talk to each other and split the available power between whoever's actually plugged in.
That sounds great in theory but I don't fully understand the mechanics of it. Is it a fixed 50/50 split whenever two are plugged in, or does it actually change in real time depending on who's charging? What happens if a third tenant eventually wants one, does it just handle that automatically since it caps out at 6 units, or does each additional unit need its own conversation with the electrician about capacity? And does this actually save us from having to upgrade the panel, or am I just delaying that conversation?
I'd rather understand this properly before I sign off on it for the building, since I'm the one who has to explain it to tenants (and to my boss) if it doesn't work the way it's supposed to.

Not a fixed 50/50, no. It renegotiates on its own every time a car plugs in or unplugs, so if unit A finishes for the night, unit B's share goes up automatically. Whole thing is still bounded by whatever the shared circuit and panel behind it can deliver at once though. Power Sharing splits what's there, it doesn't add capacity that isn't already at the panel.
That part makes sense. How would I actually confirm the existing circuit has headroom for a second unit before I pay for a full site visit? Is that something I can read off the panel labeling myself, or does it really take an electrician opening it up to know for sure?
Saw this exact question come up on a job last month. Owner wanted to eyeball it off the panel label before calling anyone. Panel label matched the main breaker fine, but the subpanel feeding that circuit was already close to its limit from other stuff on the building. Real answer took the actual load calc.

The negotiation happens over Wi-Fi, not a physical link. Each Wall Connector broadcasts its own SSID during setup, then the leader shares the site's Wi-Fi with the followers. That's the channel they use to recheck the split every time a car starts or stops pulling current.

Have had two Teslas on Power Sharing for about a year, mine and my wife's. Plug in together overnight and you can watch the amperage drop in the app the second the other car starts pulling. Both still full by morning so never bothered chasing it further.

Worth separating clearly since 'splitting power' gets used loosely. A splitter is a mechanical Y that divides one plug, no communication between the two sides, nothing stopping both from pulling max current at once. That's the setup that melts outlets. Power Sharing is a negotiated allocation between units that actually know about each other. Not the same category of product.

Permit and inspection do not care how the negotiation behaves in normal operation. What goes on paper is the connected load calculated for worst case, both units drawing at once at whatever the shared circuit's design amperage allows, not the reduced numbers you get once it's rebalancing smoothly. The circuit still gets sized and inspected as though the negotiation might not be running at all.

Looking at two Wall Connectors for the pickup truck and the box truck, same spot behind the barn, but they don't get back at the same time most nights. Box truck's back a couple hours before the pickup. Is Power Sharing actually worth it for just two units on a schedule like that, or is it overkill and I should just run separate circuits since capacity isn't really the constraint out here?

Mod note since a few assumptions are floating in this thread. 'Up to 6 units' is how many Wall Connectors can link and negotiate with each other, not how much total power exists. Six units on one circuit still split whatever that circuit can deliver, same math as two splitting it. Tesla's own sizing guidance: divide available amperage by number of units, roughly 12A+ per unit for overnight parking like this one. Support for 6 isn't capacity for 6 at once.

I've got one Wall Connector now, might add a second in a year or two for my partner's car. System already supports up to 6 units, so adding a second later is basically plug and play off what's already there, right? Or does the new one still need its own wiring back to the panel?
Wired in a second unit for a customer this spring, expecting it to be quick since the system already 'supported' more units. Still ran a full new conductor back to the panel, same as the first one, same as if it was standalone. The six-unit number is about how many can talk to each other, not about wiring already being there.
