Do I need a dedicated 40A circuit for a Level 2 or can I share with the dryer?
Small 1970s ranch house, 100A panel already pretty full, so a dedicated 40A circuit for the Model 3 SR isn't a small ask for us. My electrician quoted the dedicated circuit and said that's the only way he'd do it, no other option offered. My cousin, who's also a licensed electrician in a different state, told me at Thanksgiving that plenty of people just share the dryer's existing circuit with the charger as long as you don't run both at once, and that it's done all the time in older homes with tight panels.
I don't want to gamble on our only house, but I also don't want to pay for a panel upgrade if there's a legitimate cheaper path. What did people in similarly tight panel situations actually do, and did sharing a circuit ever bite anyone?

Your electrician's right and your cousin's describing something that's only safe with the right hardware, not just good intentions. 'Share it as long as you don't run both at once' with a straight shared receptacle isn't code-compliant — nothing stops both loads from running simultaneously except memory, and memory fails. If you want to share a circuit legitimately, it requires a listed load-management or interlock device that actually prevents simultaneous operation, not an honor system.
Is that the kind of device that sits at the panel, or something at the outlet itself? Trying to figure out what to even ask my guy about.

Worth being clear on why this matters: a 30A dryer circuit with a 40A EV charger simultaneously running isn't a 'maybe it trips a breaker' risk, it's a 'wire in the wall exceeds its rated ampacity and overheats before the breaker even necessarily trips' risk depending on load and breaker curve. That's the actual hazard your cousin is casually describing away.

For what it's worth a dedicated 40A circuit on the Model 3 SR is honestly kind of overkill anyway — SR doesn't take a full charger the way Long Range does. Ask if a smaller continuous-rated circuit gets you full overnight charging for your actual daily miles, might be an easier ask on your panel than the full 40A your electrician quoted.

We had a similarly tight 100A panel and ended up doing a panel upgrade instead of any workaround — wasn't cheap but it also solved the 'add anything else electric to this house later' problem permanently instead of just kicking it down the road.

My take as just a regular owner, not an electrician: whatever you do, don't let a family member's 'it's basically fine' talk you into something a licensed guy standing in your actual garage said no to. He's the one who saw your panel and your wiring, your cousin didn't.

Priced dedicated circuit vs. panel upgrade vs. load-management device for my own place — dedicated circuit was cheapest by a wide margin if the panel has room, which it sounds like yours might not. Load-management device was the middle option. Panel upgrade was most expensive but permanent. Worth getting all three numbers before deciding.
