Detached garage already has a 6-50 from the previous owners — new EVSE wants a 14-50. What's the fix?

Retired last spring, and my spouse picked up her first EV in June while I'm still on my own EV I've had for a few years now with an outlet already sorted out at the main house. Her car lives in the detached garage instead, which has had a 240V outlet wired in since before we moved in eleven years ago, judging by the receptacle style sometime in the late 90s. Always assumed it was for a table saw or an air compressor and never gave it a second thought since we never used it for anything. Pulled the cover off out of curiosity a while back and it's a NEMA 6-50. Her charger showed up last week — a ChargePoint Home Flex — and the cord ends in a 14-50 plug, not a 6-50. Plugged it in just to see, and obviously it doesn't seat, the extra prong slot on the plug isn't there on the outlet. Called an electrician friend of a friend who quoted me for a whole new circuit before I'd even finished describing the outlet, which felt like a lot for what sounds like it should be a simple mismatch between two plug types. Before I spend real money on a rewire, I want to actually understand what I'm dealing with here. Is there a cheaper way to make this work, or is a full new circuit genuinely the only safe option once the plug types don't match? On a fixed income now so I'd rather take another week to get this right than pay for the priciest quote out of not knowing better.

Ran into the mirror version of this with my second EV — outlet was already a 14-50, first charger I bought had a 6-50 plug on it, cheaper import model. Grabbed an adapter, it seated fine, been running two years without a single issue. Didn't even think to question it beyond that.

Licensed electrician here — this is one of the more common calls I get, and it's almost never as dramatic as it sounds. A 6-50 and a 14-50 are both 240V/50A, same two hots, same ground; the only difference is the 14-50 carries a neutral. No plug-in Level 2 EVSE on the market uses that neutral pin, so the electrical reason for needing one isn't there. A 6-50-to-14-50 adapter is a real, commonly available product — it lets your EVSE's 14-50 plug seat into your existing 6-50 receptacle, and it's genuinely the fastest and cheapest fix for exactly your situation. I'd try that before paying anyone for a rewire. Two things worth knowing before you buy one. First, whatever receptacle ends up carrying the load — your existing 6-50, or a future 14-50 if you ever do swap it — should be listed for EV use under the 2026 NEC, not just a general-purpose receptacle off the shelf. Hubbell's HBL9450 and Bryant's 9650FR are the two I see specified most for that. Second, if that outlet's been sitting dead since whatever the last owner used it for, get someone to at least glance at the breaker before you load it up continuously for the first time in years — the plug type isn't the only thing worth checking.

Before I order anything — how would I even know if there's a spare neutral sitting in that box, short of opening it up myself? I'm handy enough to pull a cover plate but I don't want to be the guy who touches something live and finds out the hard way.

Kill the breaker before pulling that plate, non-negotiable. Three conductors in the box means no neutral was ever pulled — that's a new circuit, no way around it. Four conductors, with one landed on nothing or capped off, means the spare's sitting right there and a receptacle swap is all you need. If you're not confident telling those apart yourself, get a licensed electrician to look — this is a five-minute check, not a big service visit.

Late-90s receptacle in a detached garage — I'd want eyes on the breaker and wire gauge before trusting it for nightly continuous draw, regardless of which plug ends up on it. Old outlets that never got real use sometimes hide corroded lugs behind the cover plate.

Tested the ChargePoint Home Flex last year — it ships with a fixed 14-50 plug molded onto the cord, no swap kit in the box like some of the pricier hardwire-capable units include. If that's what showed up at your door, the adapter really is your only non-electrician option; cutting the plug off and hardwiring it yourself voids the warranty on units sold as plug-in.

Buy the adapter UL or ETL listed, not just whatever tops a marketplace search for "EV adapter." Parkworld and a couple other brands make legitimate ones. Plenty of no-name knockoffs get warm under continuous draw. Don't grab the cheapest listing.

Would a Y splitter work instead, so it just fits either outlet without buying a specific adapter?

Different problem than what a splitter solves, and don't use one here regardless. A splitter feeds two loads off one circuit, which is its own fire risk on a 50A breaker if both draw continuous current — unrelated to a plug shape mismatch. OP is seating one EVSE's plug into one existing receptacle. The adapter is built for exactly that; a splitter just adds failure points to a problem that doesn't need one.

One thing nobody's mentioned yet — confirm the breaker is actually 50A and not something derated for whatever the outlet was doing before. Saw a job last month where a 6-50 from an old shop compressor was sitting on a 40A breaker because the compressor never pulled full load. Adapter's fine electrically, but the breaker upstream decides what you can actually pull continuously.

Update since a few people asked — had the electrician friend of a friend swing by. Breaker's a real 50A and there are four conductors in the box, so there's a spare neutral back there after all. Going with the adapter for now since it gets me charging this week, but I'm going to have him swap in a proper EV-listed 14-50 receptacle next month once I've got the funds set aside, rather than run the adapter indefinitely. Feels like the right middle ground between not waiting another month and paying for a new circuit I apparently don't need.

Adapter now, proper receptacle once the wiring's confirmed, skip the new circuit since the neutral was already there — that's the right order. Sounds like the friend-of-a-friend saved a few hundred dollars just by actually opening the box instead of quoting over the phone.
