Chevy Volt + Kia Niro PHEV on one 120V outlet — is this a fire waiting to happen?
We've got a 2017 Volt and a Kia Niro PHEV sharing one garage, and between the two of them our actual daily miles are low enough that a full overnight top-off on regular 120V is plenty — neither of us drives far enough to need anything faster. Problem is the garage only has the one 20A GFCI outlet that makes sense for charging, so for about the last four months we've had both OEM charging cords plugged into a splitter/adapter thing we found that turns one outlet into two, and just leave both cars connected overnight.
It's been fine as far as we can tell, no tripped breaker, no complaints. But my husband mentioned last week that the splitter itself feels warm to the touch when he goes out to unplug in the morning, which is the first time either of us really stopped to think about whether this is actually a reasonable setup or something we've just been lucky with. Is this genuinely dangerous, or normal enough not to worry about? Open to better setup ideas if this is as bad as it sounds.

Warm splitter is your answer right there — that shouldn't happen on a properly rated connection, full stop. A single 20A GFCI outlet isn't meant to run flat-out for hours at a time, and each OEM Level 1 cord typically draws somewhere around 8-12A depending on the vehicle. Two of them on a splitter pulling toward the top of that range for hours, with an extra connection point (the splitter itself) adding contact resistance, is exactly the recipe for the heat you're feeling. Stop using it tonight, this isn't a 'monitor it' situation.
That's a stronger reaction than I expected honestly, especially given how many months this has been running with zero visible issues. What would you actually do instead with just one outlet to work with?
Cheapest real fix: alternate nights, one car per outlet per night, no splitter at all. If you want both charging simultaneously without touching your panel, you'd need a second dedicated circuit run to the garage, which is obviously a bigger job. But splitting one 20A circuit two ways every night isn't a fix, it's just spreading the same risk out.

Splitters/adapters marketed for 'two devices, one outlet' are built for things like a phone charger and a lamp, not two continuous multi-hour EVSE loads. Most aren't rated for anything close to that duty cycle, and even the amperage math aside, that's reason enough to stop.

This is basically why I never messed with any adapter or splitter for the Lightning even before I had a dedicated circuit. Anything that turns one plug into two for something pulling real continuous current has always felt like asking for it.

Retired now but I've seen two separate house fires traced back to daisy-chained or split high-draw loads on a single receptacle, neither one was EV charging specifically but the physics is identical — heat builds at the weakest connection point, which is almost always the adapter or splitter itself, not the factory-made cords on either end.

If you want to keep it simple and cheap rather than running a whole second circuit — a basic mechanical timer on the outlet so car A charges 10pm-2am and car B charges 2am-6am off the single existing circuit might get you both topped off overnight without ever running two loads at once. Worth asking an electrician if that's a reasonable stopgap for your specific panel.

One more thing worth flagging — GFCI outlets sometimes run slightly warm just from normal operation, so I don't want to overstate that specific symptom alone. It's the combination (splitter plus two continuous loads plus visible warmth) that adds up to stop-now, not any one piece alone.

For what it's worth, the Volt and Niro's OEM cords are both already current-limited by the car itself, so this isn't a case of the cars misbehaving — it's purely the splitter and shared receptacle being the weak link. Good news is the fix is entirely on the infrastructure side, nothing wrong with either car.

If you do end up running a second circuit, worth asking whether a shared 240V run with a proper load-share device would actually serve you better long term than two separate 120V runs, especially since you'll probably want faster charging eventually.

is there such a thing as a splitter actually rated for two chargers running at once or is doubling up on one outlet just never a good idea
