Charge Station Pro or just a 32A portable for the Lightning? Trying to figure out what my job-site truck needs

Picked up a Lightning Flash back in March, my first EV after twenty-some years of gas trucks for the business. Mostly using it for material runs and job sites around Charlotte, maybe 25 to 35 miles a day on a normal week, nothing like the road-trip range stuff people worry about. Dealer quoted me the Ford Charge Station Pro at $1,310 plus their install estimate of right around $2,200 once they factor in the new 100A circuit and some panel work, since my panel's already carrying the shop compressor and a mini-split unit I added a couple years back. That's pushing $3,500 all in before I've even plugged the truck in once. A buddy on a Lightning forum keeps telling me a 32A portable off a 14-50 would cover what I actually drive without any of that panel drama. I believe him on the daily mileage math, but I keep going back and forth, because Charlotte got hit with a bad ice storm two winters ago and we lost power for four days, and part of me likes the idea that this truck could someday run part of the house if that happens again. So — anyone actually run the numbers on FCSP vs a portable for a Lightning that's mostly doing job-site duty, not commuting 80 miles a day? Trying to figure out if I'm paying for capability I'll never use.

Licensed electrician, and this one's pretty straightforward on paper: the FCSP's 19.2kW rating needs a 100A circuit, not 80A, because NEC wants a 25% margin on top of the 80A continuous draw. On a lot of 200A panels that are already carrying central air, a mini-split, and shop equipment like yours, that additional 100A doesn't just fit — you're either doing a panel upgrade or adding a load management device to make room. Before you commit to either option, get someone out to do an actual load calculation on your panel. That number matters more than the marketing spec on the box.

Electrician-adjacent, not licensed, but I've seen this exact panel situation more than once. Compressor plus a mini-split is usually 40-50A of continuous load between the two before you add anything else. If your panel's a 200A main, you might have headroom, might not — that's not a guess you want to make from a dealer quote. A load management box runs a few hundred bucks and can let you add the circuit without touching the panel at all — ask your installer to quote both ways.

Ran the numbers because that's what I do. $1,310 for the unit plus $2,200 install is $3,510. A decent 32A portable is $400-$600. That's roughly $3,000 you're spending on capability, not convenience, since 7.7kW off a 32A overnight covers a full refill on anything under about 40 miles a day easily. The only version of this math that flips is if you actually want the backup power feature down the line — that's a real value, just not a charging-speed value.

That's basically where my head's at too. The ice storm thing is more of a "would be nice" than something I'm planning around, if I'm honest. No solar, no battery, just a truck. Probably telling on myself that the backup power idea is more the appeal of a cool feature than an actual need right now.

Gonna push back a little on the "cool feature" framing, only because I went through this exact decision from the other side. Farm stand in rural Vermont, and losing power for even a day means losing the walk-in cooler's contents. I priced out FCSP plus the Home Integration System for the backup power piece specifically, and for me that's what actually justified the truck purchase over a smaller EV — not just a novelty feature. If backup power genuinely isn't something you'd use, I agree the math doesn't work. But be honest with yourself about whether it's really "nice to have" versus something you'd have paid separately for anyway.

Being precise about what that actually requires matters here, since it trips people up: FCSP alone doesn't get you Intelligent Backup Power. Ford requires the Home Integration System on top of it, which runs about $3,895 more. So the real comparison for anyone considering V2H isn't $3,510 vs a portable, it's closer to $7,400 vs a portable. That's a very different number, and it's the one that should drive the decision, not the FCSP price by itself.

Electrician, and I did a version of this in my own condo without going anywhere near FCSP pricing. Retrofitted a Level 2 setup with a load management device instead of upgrading the panel — it just backs off the EV circuit automatically when the AC or range kicks on. Cost a few hundred extra over a straight install, nowhere close to a panel upgrade. If backup power isn't the goal, that route gets you a proper hardwired charger without the 100A circuit problem at all, which is really what's driving your dealer's cost estimate up.

I log every charge session I've had, different vehicle but the pattern probably transfers. On days I actually plug in, my draw rarely gets anywhere near what my charger's rated for — most nights it's topping off 20-30% of the battery, not doing a full 0-100. If your daily mileage is really 25-35 miles like you said, you'd be shocked how little of a 32A portable's capacity you'd even touch on a normal day.

Four years on an outdoor Level 2, not a portable, so slightly different setup, but one thing nobody's mentioned: if this truck lives outside at job sites or your driveway isn't garaged, check how the portable handles being left plugged in through weather. Mine's hardwired with a proper enclosure. A portable cord coiled up outside in Charlotte summers and ice storms both is a different durability question than one living in a garage.

35 years doing this, and the thing I'd add to the panel-capacity conversation: get the load calc done regardless of which charger you pick, because if you ever do add solar or a battery later, you want to know your headroom now rather than finding out mid-project. Doesn't cost much to have an electrician run the numbers, and it answers the FCSP-vs-portable question and the future-proofing question at the same time.

Leaning toward getting the load calc done first like a few of you said, then probably a 32A portable for now since the backup power piece isn't a real need today, just a maybe-someday. If Ford runs that free-charger promo again I might reconsider, but paying full price now for a feature I'm not using yet doesn't make sense to me.

Following this because I'm holding off on buying a Lightning until I know if Ford's going to run another one of those free charger promos. Does anyone know if those come back on a schedule, or was the 2024 one a one-off? Would change my timeline if there's a decent chance of another window.

Nothing official that I've seen, but the pattern with OEM promos like that is usually tied to a sales push around a slow quarter or a new trim launch, not a fixed calendar. I wouldn't buy on the assumption it's coming back, but it's also not unreasonable to check Ford's site every few months if the timing isn't urgent for you.
