Bought a "smart splitter" for two EVs on one 240V — is this a real product category or a rip-off?
Lightning's been our daily driver for almost a year now and my wife just picked up an EV6 last month, so all of a sudden we're a two-EV household with one 240V outlet in the garage from the original Lightning install. Been looking at these "240V smart splitter" gadgets on Amazon, the ones claiming they'll automatically switch power between two portable chargers so you don't have to physically swap plugs, running $250-350 depending on brand.
Feels a little too good to be true for that price, especially reading some of the reviews that are just five-star with no real detail. Is this an actual legitimate product category doing real current-sensing and switching, or am I about to buy a paperweight that either does nothing or actively overloads the circuit? If anyone's actually running one day to day, tell me how it's gone.

The legitimate category exists, but it lives on reputable EVSE brands' own dedicated splitter/load-sharing hardware, not generic Amazon listings with no visible safety mark. A real one senses current draw and either alternates full power between two connected vehicles or splits available amperage between them, and never lets combined draw exceed the circuit's rating. If a $250 Amazon listing doesn't show a real certification mark in the actual product photos, not just claimed in the text, I'd assume it's just a dumb mechanical switch or worse, a straight pass-through splitter with no current logic at all.
Good gut check, honestly. I went and re-checked the two listings I was leaning toward and neither one has a visible cert mark in any photo, just text claiming 'safety certified' with nothing specific.

The physics question underneath this is simple: does the device actually measure current before switching, or does it just alternate on a timer regardless of what's happening? A timer-based splitter with no current sensing can let both sides try to draw simultaneously for a few seconds during the switch, which is exactly the moment you'd overload a shared circuit. Ask the seller directly, in writing, which one it is before buying — if they can't answer clearly, that's the answer.

Real brands do make legitimate versions of this for exactly the two-EV-one-circuit situation, they're just usually not the cheapest thing on Amazon and usually come from an actual EVSE manufacturer's own lineup rather than a generic listing. Worth searching specifically for splitter hardware from companies that also sell the charger itself, versus a no-name accessory brand.

In 35 years I saw plenty of jury-rigged 'solutions' people bought online that were never inspected, never permitted, and technically not part of any electrical code review because they're just a plug-in accessory, not part of the house wiring. That doesn't automatically make them unsafe, but it does mean nobody but the manufacturer is vouching for it, and for a $250 product from an unfamiliar brand that's a thin guarantee.

We just do the manual swap and honestly it takes maybe 20 seconds a day. Not against the gadget existing, just never felt worth the money or the uncertainty for something that quick to do by hand.

From the manufacturer support side, load-sharing splitters are a real, certified category — a few of the EVSE brands sell current-sensing versions specifically for two-EV households. The tell for a legitimate one: it lists a continuous amperage rating and an actual cert mark (UL, ETL, or CSA) on the spec sheet, not just claimed in the ad copy. A $250 listing with no manufacturer name behind it and no cert mark visible in the product photos is exactly the pattern that turns out to be a dumb mechanical relay with no current sensing at all.
