Is a 14-50 to 5-15 adapter actually dangerous for slow charging?
Moving soon and the new place only has a NEMA 14-50. My portable charger is just a 5-15 plug. Is there any real danger using a 14-50 to 5-15 adapter for slow charging? Feels sketchy but can’t justify a new charger right now.

Using an adapter means trusting it's rated for the load — check the amperage rating before relying on one.

Don’t use a 14-50 to 5-15 adapter. It’s not safe. Outlets and wiring aren’t designed for that mismatch and you risk overheating. Just stick to what both plug and charger are rated for, even if it’s slow. Better safe than sorry.

A 14-50 to 5-15 adapter is not something I'd try. I keep each plug matched to its rated outlet. If it seems sketchy, it's usually for a reason. I stick to slow charging if that's all my setup allows, just wait it out.

Coming from LA, I feel like I see every charging hack possible, but that adapter setup sounds dicey even by Cali standards. Is that kind of thing normal here in the Midwest, or is playing it safe more the norm?
No, that's not normal here. Most folks in Minnesota either use a proper 240V EVSE or stick with the 120V outlet as intended. Playing with high-power adapters is not standard or safe, regardless of region.
I’ve never actually seen anyone around here try that setup, even among folks who do some questionable installs. Midwest or not, people usually play it safer—the risk just isn’t worth it.

Adapters like 14-50 to 5-15 are not code compliant. Huge risk because a 5-15 plug is only rated for 15A and 120V, while 14-50 is 50A at 240V. Plug mismatch like that could overhear, damage equipment, or worse—shock or fire hazard. NEC 406.4(D)(6). Don't use the adapter.

A 14-50 to 5-15 adapter is a hard no. Plug is only rated for 15A at 120V, outlet can deliver much more—adapter doesn't magically downgrade the circuit. Fire hazard per NEC. Use a proper charger built for 14-50 if you want faster charging, or stick with your 5-15 plug as is.
One point: the NEC (National Electrical Code) does not allow adapters that permit a 15A device to pull from a 50A receptacle, even if you use it for low-current loads. The safety risk isn’t just overcurrent through the adapter—it’s that a fault or short in your portable charger wouldn’t trip the breaker until way past what the 5-15 plug can safely take.

If cost is an issue, keep using your 5-15 on a standard outlet and budget for a dedicated portable EVSE for the 14-50 later. Don’t use a 14-50 to 5-15 adapter for charging. Your plug and charger are only rated for 15A at 120V, while the 14-50 outlet supplies much more. Huge fire risk. I use a regular 5-15 outlet and just plan for longer charge times. Safety first.

No adapter at any price can turn a 50A 240V supply into a guaranteed-safe 15A 120V circuit; what's missing is a real transformer and overcurrent protection. The result can be a plug that gets hot enough to melt before a breaker ever trips. Anyone claiming their setup is 'safe' using such an adapter is ignoring basic wiring math. Has anyone here ever seen a UL listing for one of these on an EV charger?

I’ve had friends melt plugs doing that adapter thing, especially in houses where nobody knows the real amp ratings. 14-50 has way more juice than a 5-15 can handle. I’d just run a loooong charge from a regular outlet rather than risk the sketchy adapter route.

What brand/model is your portable charger? Most 5-15 EVSE don’t actually work safely with 14-50 to 5-15 adapters, and using one can expose your gear to the wrong voltage or current. I’d seriously avoid it—seen too many fried plugs from that mismatch. If it’s purely budget, stick with the 5-15 as intended for now.

First year I thought about adapters too, but gave up and just ran an orange cord out the window to a trusty old outlet on the porch. Not fast, but never gave me trouble. Charged overnight and it worked out fine.
Same here—used an outdoor outlet for a year before I wired in a real Level 2. Slow wins over sketchy every time. You ever have to reset the breaker during storms or did it just chug along?
