Only have a dryer outlet in the garage — is adapting it for EV charging actually safe?
My new place only has a dryer outlet in the garage (10-30 or 14-30, not sure which). Everyone online says I can just get an adapter for EV charging — is that actually safe, or is this one of those 'technically works but shouldn't' situations? Trying to figure out if I need an electrician before I plug anything in.

Dryer outlets—especially older 10-30 type—have no ground, just two hots and a neutral. Using adapters skips code requirements (NEC 625.44) and is not compliant. Also, EVSEs should be on dedicated circuits per 210.21(B)(1). Adapters with no ground introduce real shock risk. Not worth it even if it 'works.'
You actually don’t need a ground for everything—IP66 covers full protection from the environment, so as long as your EVSE is rated right, using a 10-30 with an adapter isn’t as risky as people say. Have you actually seen one shock someone?
NEC 625.44 and 210.21(B)(1) are right—no sharing, no missing ground. Seen one case where a plug adapter "worked" until a neutral-to-chassis short cooked the charger. No actual shock, but the EVSE was toast. Not a code violation you can walk back from easily.
Had a neighbor lose their EVSE the same way—a neutral fault in an old 10-30 setup. No injuries, but the charger was fried and insurance didn’t cover it since it wasn’t a code-compliant install.

Adapters on dryer outlets are a bad shortcut. No ground = danger. NEC is clear about dedicated circuits and grounding. Don't cut corners—get a real charging setup.

Did you see if those dryer circuits are ever GFCI protected or if anyone actually runs a new ground? I feel like most DIYs just cross fingers and use whatever plug fits, which is a bad scene. Ever had to break the news to a client after finding one behind a dryer?

Saw a laundry room setup last week with a dryer outlet running both the dryer and an EVSE off a splitter. Panel had no GFCI and the neutral screw was loose. Not much ground to stand on, literally. Anyone ever see those actually inspected and pass?
Never seen a splitter like that pass an inspection. I got dinged on a site just for not labeling the EVSE as dedicated load, even with a brand new panel. Inspectors around here are strict about any shared dryer circuits.
I’ve tested several splitters in multi-user laundry rooms, and the dominant failure I see isn’t just lack of GFCI or ground—it’s the plug retention under repeated swaps. Splitter housings get flexed sideways whenever cords are tugged, and after a few months, I consistently see heat marks on the prongs or arcing scars inside the plastic. The inspection would fail long before an arc fault, but these devices rarely last long enough for anyone to schedule one.

Never seen a 10-30 or 14-30 EVSE setup that would pass inspection here if it wasn’t dedicated and grounded. Usually spot them by melted prongs or a janky neutral. Most common DIY fail is using a bootleg ground or an adapter that skips GFCI entirely. Inspections turn up all kinds of “creative” wiring but code’s clear about both dedicated circuit and ground path.
Yeah, I’ve seen some creative attempts too. In Maine, most inspections I’ve dealt with will fail a setup if the EVSE shares a dryer outlet, regardless of how it’s grounded, unless the entire run is dedicated and properly protected. Do you see folks just swapping out old 10-30s for 14-30s without pulling new wire, or is that less common in your area?

Can a 14-30 ever actually be grounded, or not?
You can ground a 14-30 if it's wired with a ground from the panel. Older ones often aren't—just neutral and hots. Always check at the panel, not just the plug. If there's no real ground, it's not safe for EVSE.
Had a 14-30 from the ‘90s in my last place. Pulled the cover and, lucky me, ground was actually wired all the way to the panel—just sitting unused. If the ground wire’s there and connected, you’re set. Some are, some aren’t.

Adapters on dryer outlets crop up every year. Seen melted plugs and fried neutrals, especially on old 10-30s. If it isn't grounded at the panel and dedicated, it's not code, period. Cheaping out here can be a fire risk. Not worth it.

As a moderator, reminder: running an EVSE from a 10-30 or 14-30 without a dedicated ground is not code-compliant and introduces shock and fire risk. DIY setups might work but aren’t safe or insurable long-term. Don’t skip grounding.
If it's not grounded, does it actually shock you if something goes wrong, or is it just a fire risk?

If your 14-30 or 10-30 outlet has a real equipment ground all the way back to the panel, it can be safe4but lots of older installs just use neutral, which is not code or safe for EV charging. Adapters or "bootleg grounds" are a real hazard. Always check with a meter and confirm wiring at the panel.

Just because an adapter works for a while doesn’t mean the ground path is real or up to code. Have you ever found a DIY dryer outlet setup that actually had a properly wired, panel-grounded 14-30 with GFCI? I’ve yet to see one outside a new build.
I have actually seen one legit 14-30 with a full green ground wire to the panel and a listed GFCI breaker, but only once—new build in Burlington, the owners asked for EV prep up front. Every retrofitted laundry outlet I’ve opened was sketchy or missing ground entirely.
Everyone's citing 625.44 and 210.21(B)(1) correctly, but the part nobody's mentioning is that the 2026 revision to Article 625 also reworded how continuous load gets defined, which closes off the "well it's not running 3+ hours so maybe it's fine" argument some inspectors used to let slide. Doesn't matter what state you're in at this point — treat it as continuous, full stop. A new dedicated circuit runs $800-1500 around here depending on trench/wall run length, and that's the whole fix; there's no adapter or "grounding kit" that gets you out of needing an actual bond back to the panel. If anyone's got a specific inspector or AHJ that's still signing off on adapter setups, that would be worth flagging — it hasn't been standard practice in years.

As an electrician — short answer is usually no, not safely, at least not on an unmodified dryer circuit. NEC 625.44 requires a dedicated circuit and 210.21(B)(1) doesn't allow sharing loads like that. Bigger issue is usually the ground: older 10-30s especially often have no real ground path, just two hots and a neutral. If you want to do this safely, you're looking at a new dedicated circuit, not an adapter.
