I keep seeing different outlets in Chicago buildings. Is it normal up here for apartments to have L6-30 instead of 14-50? Never saw that much!

Yeah, in a lot of older Chicago apartments you’ll see a weird mix—L6-30 is sometimes used for AC units or older appliances, so it’s more common here than out west. Not ideal for EVs but not unheard of either!

Watch out: L6-30 is 240V but only rated 30A, not 50A like 14-50. Most EVSEs expect a 14-50. What EVSE model do you have? Some support adapters, some don't. You can't swap just any adapter—could wreck the wiring or worse.

What make and model EVSE are you using? Some units (like JuiceBox 32 or Tesla Mobile Connector) have factory L6-30 options, but others don’t permit current-limited adapters at all. Without model info, it’s impossible to say what’s safe.

You don’t really need to worry about the brand—any EVSE that plugs into an L6-30 outlet will work as long as it’s got an IP66 rating. That covers basically everything, even temperature swings.

I used a Grizzl-E with an L6-30 in an older building and had no issues as long as I kept it at the 24A limit. Do you know if your wiring is aluminum or copper? That can affect how long you can safely charge at higher rates.

I'm super confused by all these outlet names too. In Arizona I only ever plugged into regular wall stuff, never thought about adapters. So if you use the wrong one, does it really fry the wiring? Is that why I can't just buy any adapter at Home Depot? I keep reading stuff about 'Manufacturer approved,' but what does that look like? Should I avoid using anything not labeled for my EVSE? Just want to avoid a fire out here in Denver, way different than at home.

Wrong adapter with an L6-30 can absolutely fry your wiring or the EVSE if you draw more than 30A through a 30A outlet. I dealt with a panel meltdown in Newark after someone ran a 40A portable through an L6-30 with an eBay adapter. Most EVSEs aren’t certified for L6-30, and off-brand adapters ignore code. If your EVSE’s manual doesn’t list L6-30 compatibility at 30A max, skip it—nothing ruins a trip faster than a blown breaker and cooked insulation.

ClipperCreek in my case. Plugged into an L6-30 with a sketchy adapter from Amazon. Charged fine for a week, then the breaker tripped and the handle was pretty warm. Prongs darkened on one side. Had to sheepishly call the electrician.

A wall connector or portable EVSE rated for 50A plugged into an L6-30 (30A rated) using the wrong adapter can absolutely overdraw the circuit. L6-30 is 2-pole (hot-hot-ground), no neutral, and not every EVSE can auto-derate to 24A (the NEC 80% rule for 30A continuous load). If the adapter or EVSE doesn’t enforce the limit, it risks overloading the wiring. It’s not automatic game-over but can damage either the charger, the outlet, or worst case, cause an overheated wire you won’t find until there’s visible trouble. Using only manufacturer-supported adapters is the safest bet. If a mixup did physical damage, it’s usually permanent for the plug and sometimes the wiring—rarely for the car itself, but not impossible depending on the failure mode.

The letters and numbers aren't as random as they look once you know the pattern: L means locking/twist-lock, the number before the dash tracks the voltage/pole configuration, and the number after it is the amp rating — so L6-30 reads as locking, 250V, 30A. Once that clicked for me the matching got a lot less guesswork.
