Inherited an EVSE held together with extension cords and a splitter — rip it out or trust it?

Moved into a place last month with an EVSE that's already hooked up through what looks like two extension cords and a splitter into the garage outlet. Previous owner said it 'works fine' but I have no idea if that's actually safe or just lucky so far. Worth ripping out and starting over, or can a setup like this actually be OK?

Craziest was an EVSE hardwired to a subpanel next to a water heater, all original 1960s wiring, no ground, splitters everywhere. Miraculously the house didn’t burn, but it failed mid-winter after a breaker fried. Shortcuts catch up eventually.

That’s a level of risk I keep seeing with older houses—no ground and random splitters. Did you see any visible damage at the panel or just the fried breaker after it failed?

Installer here — 'works fine so far' and 'actually safe' are two very different things with splitters and daisy-chained extension cords, and inherited setups are exactly where I see the worst surprises. Wildest one I personally found was a 1960s house, no ground, splitters everywhere — worked until it didn't. Worth having someone actually look at yours rather than trusting it's been fine.

Rip it out — this isn't really a judgment call, it's a straightforward code violation on top of the fire risk. NEC 625.44 doesn't allow EVSE to be connected through extension cords or multi-outlet adapters/splitters at all; the equipment has to be either hardwired or plugged directly into a single dedicated receptacle sized for the load. A splitter feeding an EVSE also means you've got an unknown number of other things potentially sharing that circuit with a load that's supposed to be treated as continuous — that's exactly the setup that cooks a receptacle or starts a fire at the weakest connection point, usually one of the extension cord ends, not the panel. Get a licensed electrician to run a dedicated circuit and receptacle sized for whatever the EVSE actually draws continuously (80% rule — a 40A circuit for a 32A charger, etc.). It's a bounded cost, and it's the only version of this that's actually safe long-term.

This lines up with what I saw in mine — breaker fried right where the extension cord met the splitter, not anywhere near the panel. Good to actually have the code section behind it instead of just "it hasn't caught fire yet."

That's the tell every time — failure shows up at the weak joint, not the panel, because that's where the resistance and heat actually build. If a breaker fries like that (won't reset, trips instantly, visible discoloration) it's done too, don't just reset it and reuse it once the wiring's fixed.
