Found a NEMA 14-50 to 5-15 adapter online and was about to buy one so I could plug my Level 1 charger into the 240V outlet in my garage instead of running an extension cord across the yard. Is this actually fine, or is there a reason nobody sells this as a 'real' product? Feels like it should just work since the shapes fit.

The reason nobody sells this as a real product: a 14-50 is a 240V/50A circuit and a 5-15 expects 120V/15A. Changing the plug shape doesn't step down the voltage or give you the breaker protection a 5-15 circuit is supposed to have. If your Level 1 charger genuinely needs 120V, get an actual 5-15 outlet on its own circuit instead of a shape-shifter off a 240V line.
I work on a lot of garages in the Midwest, and yeah, I've seen way more sketchy adapters in Chicago than elsewhere. Not sure why—maybe more old wiring, maybe people just trying to make things work with what they have?
