Does leaving my NACS-to-J1772 adapter on year-round hurt it in a Michigan winter?
Is leaving my NACS-to-J1772 adapter attached to the wall charger year-round going to mess it up, especially through a Michigan winter? Never worried about weather with anything else in the garage, but now I'm wondering if I should bring it inside when it's really cold.

Leaving adapters attached is fine electrically but violates code if the connection isn’t permanent and weather-rated. NEC is clear about plug interfaces. Most setups I’ve seen are technically safe but not always compliant. Check your local code before you hard-mount anything.
If the adapter is not listed for permanent installation or outdoor use, leaving it on the charger can violate NEC 110.3(B) and 406.9. Inspectors can flag non-listed adapters used this way, especially if outdoors, no matter how “weather-resistant” it looks. Anyone local to New England had an AHJ approve a wall charger with a permanently attached NACS-to-J1772 outdoors?

One thing that gets missed: some NACS-to-J1772 adapters aren’t UL listed for permanent outdoor use, even if physically secure. Weatherproofing and code compliance are separate issues. Garage adapters always got crusty over the winters if I left them out—especially the connection points. Noticed the plastic on one started to crack after a bad ice storm. Now I bring the adapter inside on really cold nights. Haven't had one lock up or split since.

Is there some kind of chart or "level" for how tough different adapters or wall plugs are in cold places? Like, do they give a durability score, or do you just check for something like "rated for minus degrees" on the box? I keep thinking there's a 'Level 1' or 'Level 2' for how much abuse or cold an adapter can handle, but maybe that's not a thing?
No durability chart. If the box or manual doesn’t list a temp or IP rating, assume it’s just for mild weather. Real “toughness” is in UL/CSA markings and cold ratings, not some secret Level 2 score.

Never seen a subzero temp rating printed right on the adapter box itself—usually buried in the manual or not mentioned at all. Only time I saw one actually list -30°C was a pricey OEM. Most generics dodge the topic completely.
I checked mine again just now—manual says 'store above -10°C,' nothing printed on box. I’ve only found printed temp ratings on pricier adapters too. Never trusted the generics to actually match what’s claimed in manuals anyway.

First winter I left an adapter on the wall, the plastic turned brittle and snapped right at the latch. Thought 'indoor garage' meant it was safe. Now I just toss adapters in the truck cab if there’s a cold snap coming.

LA doesn’t get real winters, so this Chicago weather is wild to me. Is it normal up here to always bring adapters inside? Back home, I left everything plugged in year-round. Midwest cold seems brutal!

As an installer, this comes up constantly. Leaving it on isn't automatically a problem, but code-wise a lot of these adapters aren't actually listed for permanent outdoor/exposed use even if they look sturdy, and separately, cold makes cheap plastic brittle regardless of code. Happy to get into both angles if people want specifics.
