Do I actually need a Level 2 charger, or is a wall outlet enough to start?
Truck gets delivered in three weeks and I'm trying to figure out charging before then instead of scrambling after. Dealer's finance guy pushed the $2000-ish Level 2 install like it wasn't optional, but my driving is just the farm stand and back roads into town, maybe 20 miles most days, and the nearest fast charger is 25 minutes off if I ever needed it in a pinch. Is a regular wall outlet going to keep up with that, or will I end up needing the bigger setup within the first month anyway? Don't want to blow $2000 on something I don't need, but I don't want to get caught short out here either.

Don't let the finance guy scare you into the panel upgrade before you've even taken delivery. Plug into whatever outlet you've got near where you park it, track it for a real month — miles driven, percentage recovered overnight. Twenty miles a day on Level 1 recovers easily in 10-12 hours for most cars. If the math's actually short after a full month of real driving, that's when you call someone, not before. One thing worth checking on a rural property specifically — what else is on that circuit. Older farm buildings sometimes share a line with a well pump that'll trip before you get a full overnight charge.
Agree with waiting, and for anyone on an older rural property specifically — get the panel and whatever's feeding that outlet checked before assuming it's fine even for Level 1 on a long overnight cycle. Farm outbuildings wired decades ago often weren't sized for 8-10 hours of continuous draw at 120V either. Doesn't mean don't try it, just means don't assume the existing wiring handles it without someone actually looking.

Did the same when I got mine eight years ago — two months on Level 1 before touching a 240V install. Turned out I only needed about 20 miles of recovery a night. Didn't put in the bigger circuit until year three, when the commute got longer.

Call your utility about a time-of-use rate before spending on anything. Mine dropped what I pay per kWh close to half just for enrolling and charging after 9pm. Costs nothing to ask, and it pays for itself before any hardware does.

Seven years in and the rule that's held up: under about 25 miles a day, Level 1 covers it basically forever, not just as a stopgap. People jump to Level 2 because it feels like the 'real' setup, not because they actually need it. Only put one in if you clock a genuine month of misses on Level 1 first.
Is there an actual mileage number where Level 2 stops being "nice to have" and starts being genuinely worth the $2k, or does it really just come down to how many nights you miss plugging in?
Drive for a living, so the math's different, but for a 20-mile personal commute the breakeven's nowhere near $2000. Ran similar numbers for work — Level 1 covers anything under about 40 miles a day for most cars overnight. Above that you're gambling on hitting 100% before your next shift, not just "nice to have."
Worth noting since most of what gets recommended assumes everyone's headed straight to an install — the wait-and-see approach isn't only a renter thing. A $150-200 portable EVSE and a normal outlet gets most uncertain owners through the first few months fine, house or apartment. You can upgrade once you actually know your charging pattern instead of guessing on day one.

Following this because I'm in a similar spot, rural-ish, don't drive much day to day. One thing I'd add: even sticking with Level 1, get a properly rated continuous-duty outlet, not whatever's already in the garage. Learned that after mine ran warm to the touch after a few hours.

The $2000 quote is almost always a default upsell, not a requirement. Ask for it itemized — panel work, wire run, breaker, the unit itself — most of that cost only applies if your situation actually needs it. Short daily miles means you'd be paying for headroom you won't use for years, maybe ever.
