Why did my range drop so much faster than expected in the cold?
Moved from Phoenix to Denver a few months back and finally got hit with an actual cold snap this week — dash said something like 210 miles when I left the house and I watched it drop way faster than the miles I was actually driving. Never had to think about any of this in Arizona. Is this normal or is something wrong with the battery? And is it actually the cold itself doing this or is it more the heater running the whole time? Kind of freaking out a little not gonna lie.

Eight winters into this, so: nothing's wrong with the car. Rated range is measured in mild temps with no cabin heat running, real cold changes the math completely. First hard freeze of the season I lose something in the 30-40% range off the dash number depending how cold it actually gets, worse if I'm doing highway miles instead of stop and go around town. Takes a full season before you stop being surprised by it and start just planning around it — that's really the whole trick, not fixing it.
Matches what I've seen. Coldest week last January the dash was basically lying to me by 40% and I'd already budgeted for it so it didn't matter. First year it would've mattered a lot.

Logged every session since I bought mine. My city-driving efficiency and my highway efficiency at 70+ are not close — highway is regularly 20-25% worse per mile even before you add cold into it. People comparing their commute range to a road-trip estimate are comparing two different cars basically.
The stacking driftglass_k mentioned is the whole story in real cold — cabin heat and battery thermal management are both drawing off the same pack at the same time you're also fighting worse aerodynamic losses if you're on the highway. One thing that actually helps: precondition the cabin while still plugged in if your car supports scheduling it, so you're not spending battery range to do that warm-up once you've unplugged and started driving.
Speed matters more than people think too, separate from the cold. Same drive at 75 versus 65 on the highway costs me a real chunk of range, noticeably more than the difference feels like it should be for 10mph.
Does preheating the cabin while it's still plugged in actually save meaningful range versus just running the heat once we're already driving, or is it not enough of a difference to bother with for short school-run trips?
Regen is the part nobody warns you about in cold. Mine barely recuperates anything until the battery's warmed up some, so early miles on a cold morning don't get the same braking assist back that they would by afternoon.
The heater draw is usually a bigger factor than the cold itself hitting the battery directly — mine dropped a lot less once I started preconditioning while still plugged in, so the cabin gets warmed off wall power instead of pulling from the pack. Worth trying before assuming anything's actually wrong.

Does it recover any of that lost range once it warms back up outside, or is that drive's range just gone no matter what?
