Canadian EV owners: Are there any key differences in NEMA outlet code or adapter usage vs the US? My electrician mentioned some unique issues with dryer outlets here.

Biggest difference is that Canada has stricter rules about bonding neutral and ground in certain outlets—older dryer outlets (NEMA 10-30) are grandfathered but aren’t technically up to code for new installs. Always check provincial rules, and some adapters marketed in the US are not legal to use in Canada. Your electrician’s not wrong—details matter with load calculations and insurance, too.
On ground truth: after field-testing chargers with both US and Canadian NEMA dryer outlets, adapters sold as universal in the US have triggered Canadian inspector pushback more than once in my sample set. Bonding neutral to ground is the usual culprit flagged. You can still charge, but you might fail the electrical sign-off or insurance claim if anything goes sideways. If your electrician is flagging it, take them seriously—most headaches come from assuming cross-border code is identical, when local wrinkles make all the difference.

A US-bought adapter isn't illegal because it's American, it's that it assumes a 3-wire bonded configuration your inspector may no longer allow. is it the outlet code itself that's different up there, or just how many amps a standard dryer circuit is rated for?
The outlet shapes themselves are the same NEMA parts on both sides of the border — a 10-30 or 14-50 looks and mates identically whether it was bought in Vermont or Ontario. What's different is the wiring and bonding behind the faceplate, which is the neutral/ground issue people keep running into with older 10-30s. Amp rating conventions track pretty closely too — 30A breaker for a 10-30/L6-30, 50A for a 14-50 — so it's not really "different outlet code," it's the grounding rules that trip people up crossing the border, not the plug shape or the breaker size.

Is this a province-by-province thing or is the code the same across all of Canada?
It's the same relationship as NEC and US states, just one level up — the Canadian Electrical Code (CSA C22.1) is the national model code, and each province adopts it with its own amendments and enforcement timeline, same as how states adopt and tweak the NEC. So you get a shared national baseline (which is where the neutral/ground bonding rules people are describing come from) plus provincial wrinkles on top, which is exactly why "my electrician in Ontario flagged it" doesn't automatically tell you what a Quebec or BC inspector would say about the same outlet.

does a US-bought EVSE need a totally different plug up there, or just a different adapter?
Same plug, different paperwork problem. J1772 on the vehicle side isn't a US-vs-Canada standard, it's the same connector across North America, so a US-bought EVSE's actual charging plug works fine in Canada. What can trip you up is the listing on the box: a unit that's UL-listed for the US market doesn't automatically carry CSA certification, and a lot of Canadian jurisdictions and insurers want to see the CSA mark (or a UL mark with the C-UL designation showing it's also certified to Canadian standards) before they'll sign off on a permanent install. Check the label for a "cUL" or "CSA" marking before you assume a US unit is good to go north of the border — that's a bigger practical issue than the wall plug.
