Charging a Rivian through a 14-30P to 14-50R adapter — bad idea long-term?
Trying to charge my Rivian using a 14-30P to 14-50R adapter on a 220V dryer outlet. Should I be worried about damaging the vehicle or battery in the long run?

You'll be limited by the 14-30 dryer's circuit, not the adapter itself. Set your Rivian's charge rate conservatively. Most people run long-term without trouble but check connections for heat—dryer outlets sometimes do get loose over time.

I've used a 14-30P to 14-50R adapter for my own EV on a Vermont dryer outlet for a while. Main thing: your charging rate is still limited by the 30A breaker (and wiring), not the adapter or the car—you need to set the charge rate in the vehicle at or below 24 amps to stay safe. Watch out for any warmth at the outlet or on the plug after charging. It's a workable temporary solution, but over time the prongs in dryer outlets can loosen since they aren't made for repeated plugging and unplugging, so check them regularly. If you have a landlord or shared laundry, communicate what you're doing just in case. Not totally perfect, but plenty of folks do this safely with a bit of care.

Replace it, don't try to tighten it. The spring tension in a receptacle's contacts is built into the metal itself — once those contact blades have opened up enough that a plug feels loose going in, the temper's gone and there's no adjustment or crimping that restores it. What you're feeling as "loose" is actually reduced contact pressure, which means higher resistance at that connection, which means more heat under load — exactly the failure mode you don't want on a circuit you're running 24-30A through regularly. A 14-30 receptacle is a $15-20 part and a 10-minute swap if you're comfortable killing the breaker and doing it yourself, or a quick service call otherwise. Also worth checking the screw terminals inside when you do it — repeated thermal cycling from EV charging loosens those over time too, and that's a separate problem from the spring tension in the blades.

I use a similar adapter setup on a 14-30 outlet for my EV. Set the charge rate to 24A max and always check the plug after charging. Haven't had issues through the winters, but watch for loose prongs over time.
Worth checking what amperage the Rivian's actually set to pull through that adapter — a 14-30 is rated for 30A, so if the in-car charge current isn't dialed back a bit below that, you're leaning entirely on the adapter's wiring never seeing full rated load continuously. I always drop the app-side charge current a few amps below the outlet's max on adapter setups like this, then check the adapter body for warmth after a full session.

No worries using a 14-30P to 14-50R adapter as long as you set your Rivian to draw less than 30A—usually 24A is the safe bet. I’ve run a similar setup and never had issues. Just check for warmth at the plug now and then.

Does running it like that long-term ever trip the breaker, or has it been solid the whole time for you?
Two and a half years on a 14-30P to 14-50R adapter here, and I've kept the numbers on this one specifically. Zero trips as long as I keep the Rivian capped at 24A in the app. The one time it popped was entirely on me — updated the vehicle software, it quietly reset my charge current back to a higher default, and I didn't catch it before plugging in overnight. Breaker went around 2am. So it's solid, but only because the current limit is something you have to actively maintain, not something the adapter or the outlet enforces for you.

It matters more than people assume, even though the failure mode is boring—it's not that a cheap adapter is dangerous the first time you use it, it's contact resistance building up over hundreds of cycles. Name-brand adapters generally use thicker-gauge internal wiring and better spring tension in the pins, which means a tighter connection and less resistance at the contact point under sustained 24-30A load. The cheap generic ones I've pulled apart on service calls tend to have thinner stamped contacts that lose spring tension faster, so the connection gets a little looser every season, resistance climbs, and that's exactly the slow heat buildup that ages an outlet early. On a circuit you're running hard and regularly like this one, spend the extra $20-30 for a UL-listed name brand. It's cheap insurance against the exact failure mode this whole thread's been describing.
