Can you actually ground an old 10-30 dryer outlet safely, or is a new line the only option?

Is it possible to safely add a ground to an old 10-30 dryer outlet using those Amazon adapters? Or is running a new line the only truly safe option? Looking for real-world experiences.

Running a separate ground wire to a 10-30 is the only code-compliant and fully safe way. Those Amazon adapters claiming to add a ground do not meet code and can create a false sense of safety. I've seen multiple cases where users relied on them and still had shock hazards. Strongly recommend updating wiring if possible.

Those Amazon adapters don’t truly add a code-compliant ground. If you want it legit and safe, you have to run a new ground wire or replace the whole circuit. Anything else is asking for trouble long-term.

For the neutral-ground bonding issue people mention with these adapters — would a plug-in outlet tester ever actually catch that, or does it only show up if you open the box?

One night on a 10-30 with an adapter shouldn’t ruin your battery. I’ve never seen any lasting damage from a brief, non-ideal charge—maybe just a range estimate recalibrating. If it stays off, try a full charge cycle and see if it settles.

Plug-in adapters that claim to 'add' a ground to a 10-30 outlet don't create an actual equipment ground and can't meet NEC code, no matter what marketing says. Outlets wired this way can test 'OK' with some plug-in testers but may leave the ground path unreliable or totally missing. True safety means either running a new dedicated ground wire to the panel or replacing the circuit. An adapter can't make up for missing hardware.

Agreed—NEC doesn’t allow neutral-as-ground for new installs, and testers can give false confidence. Have you ever seen one of these adapters fail in person, or just heard about issues secondhand?

I’ve pulled out a couple melted 10-30 adapters from garages—one had burn marks at the neutral blade. Both looked basically fine on the outside until they failed. Nobody got hurt, but it trashed the outlet in one case.

Those Amazon 'grounding' adapters for 10-30 outlets rely on the neutral to act as a ground—so in reality, you don’t get a dedicated safety ground. It’s not code, and I’ve measured continuity to panel neutral but zero to an actual equipment ground before. I had to re-run a separate bare copper ground wire when I moved into my place—the adapters kept passing plug-in testers, but when we checked with a real meter, there was no safe path. If you want true protection for people and equipment, you need to upgrade the wiring.

Did you actually open up the outlet to inspect wire condition and connection tightness, or just rely on a plug-in tester? I’ve seen 10-30s where the neutral/ground path was barely hanging on behind an old dryer—Amazon adapters can make it look safe, but they're no substitute for real grounding. Would you ever consider running a new line, or is this rental/temporary?

I did open the cover early on and was shocked at how loose the neutral terminal was. Some flaking tape on ancient cloth insulation too. That pushed me to start double-checking every 10-30 I see now. I'd definitely run a new line if it was more than temporary.

My 10-30 adapter looked fine until it melted. Wouldn't recommend it.

No adapter fixes this — a "grounding" adapter either bonds to neutral, which is exactly the setup 625 and 250.130 don't allow on a new install, or it does nothing electrically and just satisfies a plug-in tester that isn't checking what you think it's checking. Only real fix is a new equipment grounding conductor back to the panel, or a whole new circuit if the existing run doesn't have room to add one. Before I'd even quote it: is this a DIY project or are you getting someone licensed out for it? Changes whether we're talking about a $150 parts list or a service call.
