Anyone used the GM 14-30 adapter kit instead of a new circuit?
Anyone have experience with the GM 14-30 adapter kit for L2 charging? My garage only has a dryer outlet and I’m not paying $2k for a new circuit. Any gotchas with this approach?

I’ve been using a 14-30 adapter for my EV over a year. Main thing—check your breaker rating and never exceed the 24A safe load. Some adapters have no ground; make sure yours does. Haven’t run into issues myself, just stay within limits.

Yes, and it's the breaker that caps it, not the adapter itself. A 14-30 dryer circuit is a 30A breaker, and NEC's continuous-load rule means you should only pull 80% of that continuously — 24A, which is the number everyone in this thread keeps mentioning. A dedicated circuit run for EV charging gets sized for the load from the start, so it's common to see 40A or 50A breakers feeding 32A or 40A continuous, noticeably faster than what the 14-30 adapter can ever give you regardless of what your car's onboard charger could otherwise accept. The adapter route works, it's just permanently capped at dryer-outlet speed.

I use a 14-30 dryer outlet with an adapter too. As long as you use a grounded one and don't push it past 24A, it works fine for me. Not too many gotchas, except you can't run the dryer and charge at full speed at the same time. Just stay within the amp limits.

I’ve run my Bolt off a 14-30 with a grounded adapter for years. Stayed under 24A, never ran the dryer and EV together. Every few weeks I check the plug for any heat or looseness. Haven’t found a reason to rewire yet.

One thing folks miss with the GM 14-30 kit: make sure your dryer outlet is actually grounded—not just a three-prong with a bootleg ground wire. Not strictly a pre-90s thing, though that's the biggest chunk of it. The 1996 NEC cycle is the real dividing line — that's when 250.140 tightened up and stopped allowing new dryer/range circuits to use a shared neutral-ground (three-wire) setup; everything after that should be a true four-wire circuit with a dedicated equipment ground. But "should be" isn't "is" — houses built well into the 2000s turn up with an existing three-wire run reused during a remodel instead of a new one being pulled, which is technically a code violation but happens more than people think. The only way to actually know is what quietwalrus said: pull the cover and look, or have someone check continuity between the neutral and ground bus at the panel — if they're bonded anywhere other than the main bonding jumper, you've got a shared system and a 14-30 adapter setup on that circuit isn't giving you a real equipment ground, just a hot chassis waiting for a fault. Worth the 20 minutes before you start pushing 24A through it regularly.
