The WenStorm 16A J1772 Portable EV Charger solves everyday Level 1 home charging for non-Tesla EV and plug-in hybrid owners who want the fastest possible charging from a standard 120V household outlet. It delivers up to 16A (about 1.9 kW) on a properly rated 20A circuit and automatically operates at 12A on a standard 15A household circuit — staying within National Electrical Code continuous-load limits without any switch to flip. Plugs directly into a NEMA 5-15 outlet. No electrician, no adapter, no wall mount.
At a glance: 120V Level 1 · Up to 16A (auto-derates to 12A on 15A circuits) · Up to 1.9 kW · NEMA 5-15 fixed plug · 25 ft cable · J1772 or NACS connector (choose at order) · IP55 · ETL Listed · 2-year warranty
How many miles of range will it actually add per hour?
On a 20A branch circuit at the charger's full 16A / 1.9 kW output, expect about 4–6 miles of range added per hour on typical passenger EVs. On a standard 15A household circuit — where the charger automatically operates at 12A / 1.4 kW — expect about 3–5 miles per hour. Over a 10-hour overnight window that's roughly 30–60 miles restored, which covers the daily driving of most US commuters. Actual range added varies with vehicle efficiency, battery temperature, state of charge, and available power at the outlet.
According to the US Department of Energy's Alternative Fuels Data Center, Level 1 is intentionally designed around this daily-driving use case:
“Many EV owners are able to meet their daily driving range requirements by charging overnight with Level 1 equipment, requiring no additional cost or installation, provided that a power outlet on a dedicated branch circuit is available near their parking location.”—US Department of Energy, Alternative Fuels Data Center
Do I need a special outlet, or will any 120V wall outlet work?
Any properly installed, grounded, three-prong 120V NEMA 5-15 outlet will work — no special outlet, no adapter, no electrician appointment. Because the charger has automatic current derating, it draws up to 16A on a 20A branch circuit and up to 12A on a standard 15A circuit, keeping continuous load within the National Electrical Code's 80% rule in both cases.
The outlet still needs to be in good condition. A loose, discolored, cracked, or heat-damaged receptacle is unsafe for continuous EV charging at any amperage. If the outlet is on a circuit shared with a space heater, refrigerator, or other high-draw appliance, using the EV charger and that appliance at the same time can trip the breaker — put the charger on a dedicated branch circuit if possible, or unplug other high-draw devices while charging.
Is Level 1 all I need, or should I upgrade to Level 2?
Level 1 is enough for most daily commuters: if you drive less than ~40 miles a day and can plug in overnight for 10+ hours, this charger will keep your battery topped up indefinitely. It is especially well-matched to plug-in hybrids (PHEVs), which typically have 8–20 kWh batteries and fully refill overnight on 120V.
Where Level 1 falls short: fully electric vehicles with large batteries (75 kWh+) that get driven long distances daily, drivers who need to charge in shorter windows (a few hours after work rather than overnight), or households with two EVs sharing one charger. If any of those apply, a Level 2 charger like WenStorm's 32A NEMA 14-50 portable adds range roughly six times faster.
Why is there no control box on the cable?
Unlike most portable EV chargers — which house their electronics in a heavy brick that hangs mid-cable and puts strain on the wall outlet — WenStorm integrates all electronics inside the vehicle connector handle at the car end. There is no separate brick anywhere on the cable. The car's inlet carries the connector's weight, not the wall receptacle.
Practical effects: the cable coils flat for trunk storage, the wall plug isn't loaded down by a swinging brick (a known contributor to outlet loosening and heat damage), and there is no bulky in-line control unit to route around when parking.
Key features
Auto-derating for standard household circuits
Delivers up to 16A on a 20A branch circuit for the fastest Level 1 charging available (~1.9 kW), and automatically operates at 12A on a standard 15A household circuit to stay within National Electrical Code continuous-load limits. No user switch, no manual configuration — plug in and the charger negotiates the correct current with the car.
Made for the round J1772 charging port
Compatible with many model years of Ford, Chevrolet, Volkswagen, Hyundai, Kia, BMW, Nissan, Toyota, Honda, and other J1772-equipped vehicles. Connector types can vary by model year — compare your charging port with the product photos before ordering. For Tesla and 2025+ NACS-native EVs, order the NACS variant.
Direct NEMA 5-15 connection
The integrated three-prong plug connects directly to any properly installed, grounded 120V household outlet — no separate adapter required. If a good outlet already exists, no electrician, no hardwiring, no permanent wall charger is needed.
25 ft cable with electronics in the connector handle
Reach across garages, driveways, and different parking positions. All electronics are integrated into the vehicle connector at the car end, so there is no heavy inline control box on the cable and no brick pulling on the wall outlet. Easier to coil, carry, and store.
Built-in temperature monitoring
The charger can reduce or stop charging if unusual heat is detected at the connector, supporting continued charging during extended overnight sessions.
ETL Listed and IP55 weather-resistant
ETL Listed (Intertek). The IP55-rated construction supports indoor and outdoor charging when used as directed. Keep the outlet, plug, and connections away from standing water.
Home and travel use
Everyday overnight charger, backup for when your Level 2 is unavailable, workplace charger, vacation rental / Airbnb kit, hotel room use, road-trip backup — anywhere a standard grounded 120V outlet is available and permitted.
