Trying to figure out if I'm actually 'EV-ready' or just overthinking this
Trying to figure out if an EV actually makes sense for me before I go further down this rabbit hole. I don't even know my own normal week mileage, never tracked it — is there a real way to figure out if I'm actually EV-ready, or am I overthinking this? What actually matters here versus what's just noise online?

Get asked this a lot so here's the actual list, five things actually matter, everything else is noise: (1) what you actually drive on a normal week, not your road-trip mileage — track your odometer for a month if you don't already know, (2) whether you have anything resembling a home outlet within cable reach of where you park, (3) whether your employer has any charging at all, (4) how cold it actually gets where you live in January, not average annual temp, (5) whether you've got $500-1500 of slack for adapters/cables/maybe an electrician visit in year one. If you can answer all five without hedging, you're ready. If you're hedging on two or more, that's not a no, it's just homework before yes. (And for #1 — your existing car's odometer plus a calendar works fine, don't need an app. Write down the reading every Sunday for a month, subtract.)
Would add a sixth: whether you're the type who obsesses over range anxiety or the type who just drives and figures it out. Some people need way more buffer than the math says just for peace of mind, and that's a real cost even if it's not a financial one.
It's real in the sense that people's stated comfort threshold and their actual usage pattern are frequently mismatched — someone who never drives past 60% of rated range still checks the percentage constantly. Doesn't mean the car is inadequate, means the mismatch between perception and data takes a few months to close.
Failed my own test on #5 the hard way. Didn't budget for the fact my dryer outlet adapter wasn't rated for what I needed and ended up paying an electrician anyway, just later and more annoyed about it. Budget for the electrician up front even if you think you won't need one.
I'm ok on 1-3, but #4 worries me — does -10 count as cold, or is that nothing compared to what people here are dealing with?
This is solid but I'd push back gently on #5 — the $500-1500 range assumes you're not already set up with a decent 120V outlet somewhere nearby. Plenty of people spend closer to $50 on a heavy-duty extension cord and are totally fine for a year before deciding if they need more.
Would add: check if your state/utility has EV-specific rate plans before you buy, not after. Changes the home-charging math a lot depending where you live.
Before I put this list into practice — that $500-1500 buffer, is that on top of the price of the car itself or does it come out of the same pocket I'd already set aside for insurance and registration? Fixed income now, so I need to know exactly which line item that hits before I commit to anything.
On top of the car price, separate from insurance and registration. Think of it as its own line item — charging equipment and install, not an ongoing cost. Insurance and registration are recurring costs you'll pay regardless of how you charge; the $500-1500 is closer to a one-time setup cost — cable, adapter, maybe an electrician visit — that you budget for once, early on, not something competing with your monthly insurance premium. On a fixed income, treat it as a separate purchase you make in month one or two after getting the car, not something you need lined up on delivery day.

The two that actually mattered for me were commute distance and having any outdoor outlet at all — failed the other three (garage, dedicated circuit, install budget) and none of that ended up mattering as much as the checklist made it sound.
Failing 3 of 5 and it working out fine tracks for anyone whose mileage isn't 'normal week' shaped to begin with. I drive 200+ miles a day for rideshare, blew past every range assumption on this list, and the math still worked because electricity per mile beat gas per mile by enough that the rest didn't matter.
