How do you know if your commute 'tolerates' Level 1 charging?
Trying to figure out what charging setup I actually need on day one and everyone just says "get a 240V circuit" without explaining how to know if you actually need one. How do you know if your commute "tolerates" a regular household outlet — is there an actual number to check, or do you just plug in and see what happens?

Getting this question daily enough I'll just lay out the actual decision tree: day one, you need exactly one of a regular household outlet within cable reach (fine for most commutes, slower, basically free), or a dedicated 240V circuit if your daily mileage or your patience doesn't tolerate Level 1. You don't need to decide this before buying the car — most people should wait a few weeks and see what their actual usage looks like before spending on an install. Rough number for the math: Level 1 gives you something like 3-5 miles of range per hour plugged in, depends on the car. Multiply by however many hours you're actually plugged in overnight and compare to your daily mileage — if it's close, just try it for two weeks before spending money.
Good advice, and worth adding the thing that trips people up most when they do end up wanting the 240V circuit later: get the panel capacity checked before falling in love with a specific charger's amperage. It's common for a customer to want 48A when the panel only has room for 30 without an upgrade — cheaper to find that out on day one than after buying hardware that doesn't fit the situation.
Worth flagging for anyone renting or in an apartment reading this thread — the 'wait a few weeks and see' advice is even more true for you, since a lot of renters assume they need to solve charging before getting the car and end up talking themselves out of an EV over a problem that a $150 Level 1 setup and a normal outlet would've solved for the first several months.
Wish someone had told me this before I paid for a Level 2 install in month one. Would've been fine on Level 1 for at least six months first.
Did the wait-and-see thing myself, ended up staying on Level 1 the whole first year actually. Would've spent money for nothing if I'd installed right away.

Coming from Phoenix, I've never thought about panel capacity before — is that something most houses just have, or is it common to not have enough?
Common enough that any electrician doing this work checks it as step one, not an edge case. Older homes especially. Not something to assume either way — get it looked at.

We're not really commuting, just school pickup and errands, so I don't know if the math in this thread even applies to us the same way. Is there a version of this question for 'drives a lot but never far' instead of a normal daily commute?
The framework doesn't actually care whether the miles come from one commute or a bunch of short errand runs — it only cares about total daily miles versus how many hours you're actually plugged in overnight. Add up school pickup plus your typical errand loop for a normal day, multiply your outlet's charge rate (that 3-5 miles/hour range) by however long the car's actually plugged in, and compare. Drive-a-lot-never-far usually works out even better for Level 1 than a straight commute does, since you're rarely doing one big continuous draw — the range just tops back up in the gaps between trips.
