Does 'IP66 rated' actually tell you anything about cold-weather performance?

Shopping for a portable Level 2 charger for road trips up into Canada and every listing just says 'IP66 rated' like that settles it. Does that actually tell me anything about how the cable holds up in real cold, or am I missing something? Don't want to end up with a charger that turns into a frozen hose at -20°C.

Do any of the portable Level 2s you tested specify a cable flexibility temperature in their datasheets? Some only list enclosure IP ratings, which doesn't tell you anything about how the cable will handle -20C.

Most portable Level 2 cables only show IP or NEMA enclosure ratings on their marketing, but the minimum cable flexibility temperature is usually hidden in the specs or manual—if it’s listed at all. In my experience, subzero use is always the weak point. Did any of the units you reviewed actually specify a cable temperature rating, or was it just enclosure info?

Did any of those portables actually list a low-temp flexibility spec on the cable itself, or just the usual IP or NEMA enclosure rating in the manual? Every "outdoor-ready" charger I’ve seen gave the enclosure rating front and center, but cable temp range was buried—if it was included at all. After two winters, I had a cable crack despite 'all-weather' more than once. Would love a model that openly states the tested minimum, not just generic outdoor marketing.

Never seen a portable Level 2 list an actual cable flexibility temp on the box—finding one that handles -20°C without stiffening would be news to me. Most manuals just list IP rating and leave out cable specs. Anyone found a brand that really publishes the numbers?

I thought IP66 meant the whole thing was safe for winter storms, even the cable. Are you saying that doesn't mean the cord will stay flexible or not crack in the cold? Now I'm worried — should I not be leaving my charger out during snow?

IP66 means enclosure is sealed against water and dust, not that the cable stays flexible or safe from cracking in deep cold. I’ve seen cables rated 'outdoor' snap at -25°C. I always coil mine and bring it inside overnight if extreme cold is coming.

IP66 refers only to the enclosure's resistance to water and dust ingress, not the cable or connector materials. In freeze-thaw cycles, I've measured several 'outdoor-rated' charger cables at less than 30% of their room-temp flexibility below -10C, regardless of the IP rating advertised. For subzero storage, cable jackets can microcrack even if the main box remains sealed. If you leave it out during snow, rolling or flexing the cable while frozen is what triggers most failures.

A lot of people mix up cable flexibility temperature and the enclosure IP or NEMA rating. One is for how easy it is to handle when cold (the cable spec), the other is about water or dust intrusion (the box). Did any of your tested chargers list both numbers or just the usual IP/NEMA claim?

Of the units you tested, did any actually have a label printed directly on the cable showing a minimum flexibility or handling temperature? I’ve only seen that on industrial extension cords, never on EVSE cables.

I checked mine (Grizzl-E, Mustart, and Lectron) and none have flexibility temps printed on the cable, just basic electrical/UL info. Same as you, I’ve only seen temp ratings on heavy-duty extension cords, never an EVSE.

Did any of those Level 2 chargers specify their operating temperature range for both the electronics and the cable itself? Brochures usually give an IP rating, but that's just ingress—not flexibility or charger reliability at -30°C. Wondering which models actually disclose both specs in the manual, not just on the sales sheet.

In our cold soak testing, most cable jackets become noticeably stiff around -12C regardless of IP rating. The IP rating and the cable compound rating are documented separately—most buyers only check one. The cable flexibility number, if it’s listed at all, is often buried in spec sheets, not end-user manuals. Physical handling below the marked flexibility threshold can cause microcracks—especially on budget units—with failure only visible after being flexed a few dozen times at subzero. Would be interested if any of your test units actually showed physical wear after repeat cold coils/uncoils, or if you tracked long-term cracking.

Had an early budget unit that got stiff once temps dropped—not sure the brand ever listed a flexibility rating. After a few deep freezes, saw tiny surface cracks where it bent most, but didn’t notice until year two. Got jumpy about coiling it too tight after that.

Matches cold chamber testing data on this — the split isn't IP rating, it's jacket compound. PVC-jacketed cables measurably stiffen starting around -10°C and get brittle by -20°C; TPE-jacketed units tested side by side stayed pliable down to -30°C in the same test. None of the manufacturers print compound type on the box, only the IP rating, which is exactly the wrong spec to be reading if you're shopping for a Canadian winter. Worth asking directly before buying: "what's the cable jacket material," not "what's the IP rating."

Tested three portable L2s specifically in subzero Canadian weather for this exact reason — IP66 only covers dust/water ingress, it says nothing about cable flexibility or cold performance. That's a completely separate, usually-buried spec. Happy to get into specifics on what I found if people want to ask.
