Does cold actually damage the battery, or just temporarily reduce range?

New to all this and trying to figure out what actually trips people up versus what's just forum paranoia. Does cold weather actually damage the battery itself, or is it more about the car using extra power to heat things — like is range loss in winter temporary or permanent? And what else should I actually be worried about that I probably haven't thought of yet?

Six years in, here's what actually cost me money versus what people warn you about that turned out not to matter. Actually cost me: assuming EPA range held up in real winter driving, and buying a charger rated way past what my car could even accept. Didn't matter at all despite what forums said at the time: the instant-torque acceleration thing, one-pedal driving adjustment, any of the 'will my neighbors judge me' stuff. On the cold-battery question specifically — it's temporary, not damage, the pack itself isn't harmed by cold, you're just losing usable range and power to heating until it warms back up.

The overbuying-the-charger one is real. Bought 48A capacity for a car that maxes out accepting 32A. Wasted money on headroom I'll never use.

The EPA-range-in-winter one deserves its own warning label. Real-world sub-zero driving regularly runs 30-40% below rated range once you account for cabin heat and battery thermal management, and that's before you factor in highway speeds. If your trip planning assumes anything close to the EPA number in real cold, budget the shortfall in before you leave, not after you're stranded wondering why the range dropped.

Since that first winter I stopped trusting the dash number below about -10°C and just plan on 25-30% less than it shows — costs you nothing to arrive with buffer, but running out actually trying to reach a charger in that cold is a much worse day.

Temporary, not damage. Cold slows the battery chemistry (less usable capacity while cold) and the car spends real energy keeping the pack and cabin warm — two separate effects stacking on the same cold day. Range comes back once it warms up, nothing permanent from normal winter driving.

Fair, that one probably does depend on what you're coming from. Wasn't an issue for me but I'll grant it's not nothing for everyone.

Logged pack temp against usable kWh for two winters. frostholm's right it's not damage, but there are two separate effects worth being precise about: the heating draw, and a temporary BMS cap on how much of the pack it'll release below a certain temp. Both hit on the same cold day, which is why the loss feels bigger than 'just heating.' Every session I've got shows full capacity back once the pack's warm — zero permanent drop in two years of logs.

One more from the actually-cost-me column since people keep asking: 12V accessory battery died on me at year four, earlier than my gas cars ever did one. Cold makes that worse too. Not the traction pack, just the little battery that runs everything else — worth knowing it's a separate thing that can fail.

Add one: not checking whether your specific utility has a time-of-use rate before you start charging on autopilot at whatever hour is convenient. Cost me more than it should have for the first few months just charging whenever.

One thing that doesn't get mentioned enough: DC fast charging itself slows down in real cold, not just your driving range. Showed up at a highway charger at 4°F last winter and it took almost twice as long as it does in summer for the same percentage. Budget the time, not just the range.
