Do the 'universal' portable EVSEs that fit every outlet actually work?
Has anyone tried one of the so-called 'universal' portable EVSEs that claim to work with 5-20, 6-20, 14-50, and even TT-30? I want one charger that covers all bases, especially for road trips and campgrounds.

I get so mixed up with all these plugs! If a charger can work with all those different outlets, does it come with a bunch of different adapter thingies? Is it easy to tell which plug goes where, or do you ever worry you might use the wrong one? Super curious because I always mix up which outlet is for what.
If you pick the wrong adapter for those different outlet types, what actually happens? I get nervous about melting something or tripping the breaker, especially since I've never seen half these plugs in AZ. Are they color coded or something?
Yeah, a lot of these universal chargers come with a whole pouch of adapters and the plugs are usually labeled so you match the adapter type to the outlet (like 6-20 or 14-50 printed right on it). I always check the label on the outlet at the campground and double-check the adapter, just in case—has worked out so far! Do you take photos of the outlets you run into for later reference, or just try to memorize them?

I’ve used a universal EVSE for trips and can confirm they’re pretty handy if you bounce between locations. They usually come with a bag of adapters for different outlets—just make sure each is firmly connected and that the charger auto-detects the plug so it doesn’t draw too much current. Read the manual so you don’t mix up amperages, but the good models make it almost foolproof. Tried one at a campground. It worked, but I had no way to check the outlet's condition beforehand, which made me nervous.

Color-coded wraps beat plastic bags for adapter storage. I’ve used a cheap tackle box insert to keep the adapters separated—works okay in the trunk and I don’t worry about tearing.
Nice, I use a little parts organizer tray for the adapters too. Ever have trouble with the insert sliding around while you drive? Mine rattles sometimes on dirt roads.

Outdoor-rated is not all-weather-proof unless you read the enclosure and connector fine print. Most manuals still tell you not to submerge or let water pool inside the cable entry. That’s a gap between the marketing and the real world.

Depends on the charger. Some auto-detect, but plenty want you to set the max amps before plugging in. Never trust it to guess right. What charger do you have?
Mine makes you pick the amps on the little screen before you plug in, otherwise it’ll just use the last setting. I forgot to dial it down once at a friend’s house with a 20A outlet—breaker tripped after a few minutes. Now I always check before plugging in.

Worth flagging: if that warmth on the 14-50 adapter ever crosses from "warm to the touch" into genuinely hot, that's not just "higher amps" — it usually means the adapter's internal contacts aren't seating as tightly as the EVSE's own plug does. I check mine with the same palm test I use on outlets: six inches from the connector, then right at the adapter body. If the adapter's noticeably hotter than the cable, back off the amperage and inspect the pins before it becomes a bigger problem.
Mine’s a Grizzl-E. For adapters, got a couple of Lectron ones, also a homemade 6-20 pigtail that’s uglier but works. The 14-50 gets noticeably warmer if I’m pulling 32A for hours, but never worryingly so. What are you using?
Using a JuiceBox with OEM and Camco adapters. No homemade ones but I check contacts for heat periodically. Haven’t had any overheating, even at 32A, but I don’t run continuous sessions over 2-3 hours. Do you monitor temps or just rely on touch after charging?

Does the amp rating change automatically depending on which plug I've got attached, or do I have to set that myself every time I switch outlets? Down in Austin I never had to think about any of this.
I keep a cheat sheet with outlet faces and matching adapters taped to my charger bag. After the second time I almost plugged a TT-30 adapter into a 14-50, I got tired of guessing.
Yeah, first winter with my EV up here and sorting the adapters in the cold with gloves is a whole extra challenge. Ever had any outlets look a bit sketchy or do you just go for it?

Universal portable EVSEs can handle multiple outlet types, but careful matching of adapters is key. If you use the wrong adapter, best case the EVSE throws a fault and won’t start; worst case you draw too much current for the plug or trip a breaker. The adapters themselves don’t limit current—safe charging relies on the EVSE recognizing the plug and auto-setting the current, or you manually setting it. That’s why labeling adapters and checking specs is more important than how “universal” the charger claims to be.

I'm always confused by all these different universal adapters! If the charger says it works with 5-20, 6-20, 14-50, and TT-30, is that basically like saying it's 'Level 1' for some plugs and 'Level 2' for others? Or does it just mean it's strong/fancy enough to handle all of them? I'm always worried I'll accidentally pick the 'Level 2' plug for a weak outlet and mess something up. Do you just try different ones until it fits? If anyone has tips for keeping the adapters straight, I'd love to hear them!

Universal just refers to outlet compatibility, not weatherproofing. You need to check the charger’s IP rating separately—mine is IP67 and has held up fine outside through the winters.
that “universal” label totally threw me too. i figured it meant you could dunk the thing in a puddle and still charge just fine, but turns out you still have to check for IP ratings? is there a spot where they actually print that on the dang charger?
Yeah, there should be a physical spot on the charger itself—usually right on the back or bottom of the control box—where they print the IP rating (like IP66 or IP67). If it’s not there, check the spec sheet or the user manual that came in the box; reputable brands always list the weather rating clearly.
