Is Level 1 charging enough if I work from home?

My company went to a hybrid schedule about three years ago and I'm now in the office maybe one day a week. I've had the Ioniq 5 about two months now — picked it up in June — and honestly didn't think the charging setup through much before it arrived, figured I'd deal with it once the car was actually in the driveway. Here's what actually changed my thinking: about six weeks ago I started logging my daily mileage in a spreadsheet (I'm an actuary, this is just what I do with everything) and the number that jumped out is that on a typical week I'm only driving about 15-20 miles a day, a grocery run, picking up my daughter from practice, the occasional trip into Cambridge. Nothing close to what I assumed a "normal" commute looked like when I first started shopping for the car. The garage outlet is a standard 120V, nothing special, and since I'm home most of the day now I just plug in around 9am when I sit down at my desk and unplug whenever I remember, usually sometime in the evening. That's a lot more plugged-in time than the "overnight only" scenario every article seems to assume. So far it's kept up fine, but I want to know if I'm missing something that's going to bite me eventually, a cold snap, a longer errand day, battery degradation over time, whatever. For people who are home most weekdays, is Level 1 actually a stable long-term setup or am I just early in finding out it isn't?

Same setup here, minus the spreadsheet. I run the farm stand from home base, so the car's plugged in from whenever I open up till I close, sometimes 10+ hours. Never sat down and calculated it, but based on how much range I get back most days, it's closer to 40 miles than the 25 people quote for trickle charging. The extra daytime hours matter more than people give them credit for.

Worth being precise about the baseline here: FHWA's household travel data puts average US daily round-trip driving around 30 miles, and Level 1 covers something like 60-75% of the national distribution at 3-5 mi/hr on a 120V/12A circuit. But that average is across every driving pattern, commuters included. A WFH household isn't average by definition, you've cut the two legs of driving that push most people's daily total up. Have you actually logged your mileage over a few months, or is 15-20 a rough estimate from memory?

Logged, not estimated, started tracking the day I picked up the car since I didn't trust my own sense of it. About six weeks of data now, average is 17.4 miles a day, single highest day was 61, a day trip to see my in-laws. Even on that outlier day the car had a full night plus most of the next morning plugged in before I needed it again, so it wasn't actually close.

Different animal with the Lightning. I'm home plenty during the week too, between job sites, but that truck's battery is big enough that even a full day plugged into 120V barely dents what I used driving to sites and hauling stuff. Learned that the hard way trying to skip the L2 install for a few months. WFH helps, but what you're driving matters just as much as being home.

L1 wouldn't touch what I drive. Some shifts I'm doing 150-200 miles between rideshare and delivery, and at 4 mi/hr that's basically running the charger the whole time I'm not driving and still falling behind. WFH changes your math because your daily number is small. Mine isn't, so this thread's math doesn't apply to me, just flagging the other end of it.

One thing that gets left out of these threads: the car itself draws around 200W continuously just staying awake during a charging session, onboard electronics and communication with the EVSE. At a typical L1 input around 700W, that's close to 25% of what you're pulling going to overhead instead of the battery. At a 7kW L2 rate the same 200W is closer to 3%. Doesn't mean L1 is a bad choice, just means the effective rate is a bit lower than the plate numbers suggest.

25% of not much is still not much. On OP's mileage that overhead is maybe a dollar or two a month at typical electricity rates. Matters a lot more once you're pulling hundreds of miles a week through the same connection.

On the warm-plug question that always comes up in these threads: it's rarely the amperage itself. Most of what I find on a service call is a loose backstab connection at the receptacle, or aluminum branch wiring from a house built before the 70s reacting badly to hours of continuous draw. A 12A pull for 8-10 hours a day is well within a standard 15A circuit's rating if the receptacle and wiring behind it are actually sound.

Left my extension cord reeled up on the spool once while charging because it was raining and I didn't want it lying in the yard. Cord got noticeably warm at the coil after a few hours, heat has nowhere to go when it's wound up like that. Unreeled the whole thing now, every time.

Older GFCI receptacles trip under sustained load more than people expect, not a defect, just how the first couple generations of that technology behaved with anything pulling current for 8+ hours straight. If yours trips on a predictable schedule rather than randomly, that is probably it.

The one real limitation nobody in a WFH thread wants to hear: below freezing, L1's output can go net-negative once the car starts spending power on battery heating instead of range. I've watched a state of charge tick down overnight on a 120V connection in a hard cold snap, not up. It's not a dealbreaker for everyone, but if you're somewhere that sees real sub-freezing stretches, the daily math in this thread doesn't hold the same way in January as it does in September.

Question for you since OP's situation is a bit different from the usual overnight-only case: does that net-negative threshold change at all if the car's plugged in most of the daylight hours too, when it's typically a bit warmer, rather than just overnight when it's coldest? Or does the cold-soak happen regardless of when the hours occur?

It helps some, not enough to change the conclusion in a real cold climate. Daytime temps buy you a few degrees, but a Maine or Minnesota January afternoon is often still well below freezing, so the heating draw doesn't go away, just gets slightly less severe. Where it does help more is the shoulder seasons, a WFH schedule plugged in through a 34°F afternoon is in noticeably better shape than the same car plugged in only overnight at 22°F. Worth tracking your own numbers through a full winter before assuming either way.
