WenStorm NACS to J1772 AC Charging Adapter for Tesla Chargers
If you drive a Ford Mustang Mach-E, Rivian R1T, Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia EV6, Chevy Bolt, or any other J1772 EV, you have probably watched Tesla Wall Connectors sit unused at hotels, offices, and friends' garages while you hunt for a working public charger. The WenStorm NACS to J1772 AC Charging Adapter solves that. Plug the NACS handle from a Tesla AC charger into the adapter, plug the J1772 end into your vehicle's charge port, and you get full Level 2 AC charging from any Tesla AC source.
WenStorm is one of the few NACS-to-J1772 adapters that also works with the Tesla Mobile Connector — the portable travel charger shipped with most new Teslas. Most competing adapters are blocked by Tesla UMC firmware and will not start a session. WenStorm passes the handshake correctly, so the Tesla travel charger already in your household becomes a universal portable charger for any J1772 EV.
Compatible vehicles (J1772 AC inlet required)
This adapter fits any EV with a J1772 charge port. Most non-Tesla EVs through model year 2024 use J1772, as do newer vehicles that retained J1772 AC inlets:
- Ford Mustang Mach-E, F-150 Lightning (J1772 AC inlet)
- Rivian R1T and R1S through model year 2025 (CCS1/J1772 AC inlet)
- Chevrolet Bolt EV and Bolt EUV (J1772)
- Hyundai IONIQ 5 through model year 2024 (J1772)
- Kia EV6 through model year 2024 (J1772)
- Volkswagen ID.4 2022–2025 (J1772)
- Nissan LEAF 2022–2025 (J1772)
- Any other J1772-inlet EV sold in North America
Not needed if your vehicle has a NACS inlet. The 2025+ Hyundai IONIQ 5, 2025+ Kia EV6, 2026+ Rivian R1, and other native-NACS vehicles plug directly into Tesla Wall Connectors without an adapter.
Key Features
Clean J1772 control pilot handshake
Relays the J1772 control pilot signal unchanged so your EV sees a standard Level 2 session and starts on the first attempt. For Tesla Wall Connectors: attach the NACS handle to the adapter first, wait 15–30 seconds, then plug the J1772 end into your car. Newer Wall Connector firmware (Gen 3, recent Gen 2) often starts immediately without the delay.
Latching on both ends
A spring-loaded latch locks the adapter to the Tesla NACS handle — requires pressing the release button to detach. The J1772 side engages your vehicle's factory locking pin, which most EVs activate automatically when a session starts. The full assembly stays secured to your car until you unlock the vehicle.
UL 94 V-0 flame-retardant housing
The shell is molded from UL 94 V-0 thermoplastic, a self-extinguishing fire class used in high-voltage electrical equipment, to contain heat under fault conditions.
IP65 weather-sealed
Rated IP65 against water jets and dust. Suitable for outdoor Wall Connector installations year-round — rain, snow, and carwash splash do not require removing the adapter.
Compact grip shell
Short enough to clear the door frame on vehicles where the J1772 port is recessed at an angle (Rivian R1, Chevy Bolt, older LEAF). The handle seats fully and latches cleanly.

Frequently Asked Questions
Find quick answers about compatibility, plug types, outlet matching, and charging speed.
Does this adapter work with a Tesla Wall Connector at home?
Yes. Plug the NACS handle from your Wall Connector into the adapter, then plug the J1772 end into your vehicle's charge port. Your EV begins a standard Level 2 session at the amperage the Wall Connector is commissioned for — typically 40A or 48A on a home install. Compatible with Tesla Wall Connector Gen 2 and Gen 3. No Tesla account or app change needed.
Does this work at Tesla Superchargers?
No. Superchargers deliver DC fast charging at a completely different voltage and protocol. The Supercharger will not start a session through this adapter. This adapter is for AC Level 2 charging only — Wall Connectors, Destination Chargers, and the Mobile Connector.
Does this work with the Tesla Mobile Connector (UMC)?
Yes — and this is a meaningful differentiator. Most third-party NACS-to-J1772 adapters are blocked by Tesla UMC firmware. WenStorm is engineered to pass the handshake correctly. This means your Tesla's existing travel charger can charge any J1772 EV at Airbnbs, campsites, hotels, or a friend's house — without buying a second portable charger.
Is the 50A version safe for continuous 40A or 48A home charging?
Yes. The 50A adapter is rated for 50A / 240V AC continuous. A Tesla Wall Connector commissioned at 48A runs within the adapter's rated envelope during a full overnight session. Silver-plated pure copper contacts and UL 94 V-0 flame-retardant housing. For most home Wall Connectors commissioned at 40A or 48A, the 50A version is the right choice.
Can I leave this adapter permanently attached to the Wall Connector handle?
Yes. The adapter is IP65-sealed for outdoor use, so it stays on the handle year-round in outdoor Wall Connector installations. The NACS latch holds it securely. Check that your holster or wall mount has clearance for the extra length. A Tesla driver in the household can remove it in seconds with the release button when they need the bare connector.
Do I need to wait before plugging into my vehicle?
On some Tesla Wall Connector firmware versions, yes. Recommended sequence: (1) attach the NACS handle to the adapter, (2) wait 15–30 seconds, (3) plug the J1772 end into the vehicle. Waiting prevents pilot handshake errors. Newer Wall Connector firmware (Gen 3, recent Gen 2 updates) usually starts the session immediately.
Which vehicles is this NOT for?
Native-NACS vehicles do not need this adapter — they plug directly into Tesla Wall Connectors without an adapter. This includes the 2025+ Hyundai IONIQ 5, 2025+ Kia EV6, 2026+ Rivian R1T/R1S, and other vehicles with NACS inlets. If your vehicle's charge port is NACS, you have no J1772 inlet for this adapter to connect to.
Does the adapter lock to prevent theft during charging?
Yes, on both ends. The NACS side latches to the Tesla handle's release lever and requires pressing the release button to detach. The J1772 side engages your vehicle's factory locking pin, which most EVs (Ford, Rivian, Hyundai, Kia, GM) activate automatically when a session starts. The full assembly cannot be unplugged by a bystander until you unlock the vehicle.
Is this adapter UL Listed or ETL Listed?
The adapter has not established an NRTL product safety listing (UL Listed or ETL Listed). The housing material carries a UL 94 V-0 flame-retardant rating — that is a plastics flammability classification, not a product safety certification. Internal contacts are silver-plated pure copper rated for 50A or 80A continuous AC. If your HOA, employer, or insurer requires an NRTL-listed adapter, contact support@wenstormcharge.com for current documentation.
Will this void my EV's battery warranty?
No. The adapter passes standard J1772 control pilot and proximity signals unchanged — your EV sees a normal Level 2 AC session. US Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act protections also prohibit manufacturers from voiding warranties based on aftermarket accessory use unless they prove the accessory caused the specific failure.
Can guests with non-Tesla EVs use my Tesla home charger with this?
Yes. Hand them the adapter, they attach it to the Wall Connector handle, wait 15–30 seconds, and plug into their Ford, Rivian, Hyundai, Kia, or GM EV. No Tesla account or app changes needed. Multi-EV households and Airbnb hosts commonly leave one permanently attached to the handle.
What warranty comes with this adapter?
24-month warranty against thermal failure, latch defects, and pilot signal faults. Contact support@wenstormcharge.com (response under one business day). WenStorm ships a replacement unit first with a prepaid return label. No product registration required — keep your order confirmation as proof.
